TRNC Taxi fare rip offs

I had some friends staying at the Deniz Kizi hotel last week and they loved it. One evening they booked a taxi via hotel reception, to Kyrenia harbour for an evening meal, which they also loved. They were charged 60TL for the single trip taxi fare. Being visitors they did not know the fares. On the return journey they picked up a harbour taxi and the fare, 25TL ! Realising something was wrong, they asked for my help to get this sorted. They have now had their monies refunded to them. Anyone else experienced problems with rip off taxis? this is not how to treat our visitors!

yea i have been charged 20tl for a really short distance just coz it was a chrysler. and cab prices here are generally rip offs

tell you the truth cant come all the way to lapta town to drop you down the road

but can pick you up and drop you of to kyrenia to anywhere but not close trips will do close trips in town but wont come all the way to esentepe village to drop you to a indian on the main stretch sorry guys

i think that ripping people off has become second nature to far too many Cypriots.........



I look forward to the day that all the Brits are driven away, leaving just DC for them to rip off.............

Ask for the cost before..............then again life might be too boring...........with nothing to moan about.

It depends on who you use. Try Husseyin at Ozytaxis - he won't rip you off.

Yorg is right for once, ask the price before you get in, the driver will either give you a price or tell you it's on the meter.

you are so right Yorg. I phoned my friendly Lapta guy last sat night from Haci Ali to Illgaz 25, he took me every day from further down lapta to the restaurant fo 10 tl. It was a shock but I wouldnt do my road xx

Surely it is illegal now for taxis to not have meters. So if the taxi has not got one, do not use it.

Any taxi we use in the Lapta area has a meter and we have never been ripped off. Kings Taxis on the Lapta strip, never take the money from us on the way there always wait until the return journey and always have turned up on time.

I totally agree with all of you re taxi fares but what concerns me also is an incident I witnessed the other night.

A young English man in a rented villa next door arrived back in a taxi from the harbour and we heard an altercation re him paying the fare.

This person was on his 4 th night of a 2 week holiday.

He was telling the taxi driver that he only had 10 lira to pay him as he was returning to the UK the following morning!

Doesn't help the overall situation does it? Makes me wonder if the next Brit who gets in his taxi will be over-charged.
