Beware of disposing of old computors. Im no tec kid but i do know even if you think you have cleaned the hard drive a lot of information is still able to be obtained if you know what you are doing.

@mikea11..Thats ture information can be stolen even if the computer is formatted but we are not looking for any kind of info, we are just looking for old non working laptops just to use them as spare so that ppl get something for their crap instead of putting them into the bin and on the other hand ppl who have trouble with their computer can be fix in cheap and in north Cyprus importing from outside is not that easy and some time delivery cost more than the spare itself so just to make things easy and both sides are in benefit.

Sanjeev Msg 8 - good idea but someone else needs to destroy the hard disc or I understand Fdisk it.

Is the Windows (if genuine) not worth a lot even if an old version as upgrades can be cheap. If so how can you delete all the information but still preserve the operating system?

if you are worried about the hard drive just stick a very strong magnet on it and it will render the drive useless. but unless you have sensitive government documents or you've been surfing bad sites whats the problem ??



and i have 2 old, laptops you can take from me, a dell (some keys are missing) and a accer aspire 1300, both very old, the accer is ok just the inverter is not working.

Replay to Msg 10 there is some softwares which can completely wipe your disk and then nothing can be recover at all but they are complex to use for a non IT person,during this process everything will be cleaned and will be completely wiped out even operating system but after doing all this a fresh system can be install,stealing info is not really a serious matter to recover all that info softwares and techniques are really expensive and takes hours to recover the data ..

We can buy laptops minus hard drives but thts the main spare we can use,while installing it to another laptop we clean it first and install new operatin system which is same as genuine they are all enabled to get the updates like a regualar genuine windows .

Fdisk will not erase all the data on a hard drive. You need to use sopmething like 'secure erase' if you want to do this.

If a machine comes with a genuine licsensed version of windows when bought (oem version) it will have a sticker on the machine with a licsense code on it. If you reinsall the same version of windows from disks and use this code then it will be valid. The licsense is for the machine, not for a given installation. You can resinstall as many times as you like to that machine. The only problem might be findind install disks of the same version of windows if the disks that came with the machine when purchased are lost.

@ Erolz we have windows with keys and updates enabled we been doing ths for last 1 year everything work fine so we dont need that codes to use during install and you can not use a genuine windows code more than 3 times you have to pay to get another code

When you buy a machine with a legitimate copy of windows on it already it will be an OEM version of windows. OEM versions of windows are tied to the specific machine they were bundled with. You can reinstall this version of windows as many times as you like on that given machine, unsing the code on the label stuck to the machine. You can not install and use that code on another machine, even if the original machine is no longer in use.



It is possible to install a non genuine version of windows on a machine and for it to 'work' fine including updates. However this is not the same as having a genuine licsensed version of windows on a machine.

A standard delete in windows does not remove the actual data, just the indexes to where the data is, but that does not mean it can not be wiped by other means. You can overwrite the entire disk ithe 'null' values or you can use a secure erase utility like the one detailed below
