I read Stephen Day's column recently a while I agree with many of his opinions regarding life here in the TRNC, I was more than disappointed with his pathetic comments about the woman who has been given command of a Royal Navy frigate. Does he dislike women so much that he has to make a peurile remark about 'her not being in charge of missiles at certain times of the month'. I may or not agree with women being at the sharp end of the armed forces but to bring a woman's menstrual cycle into it is pretty poor. I suspect this lady has had to fight like hell to be selected to command the vessel, there's no need to patronise her like this. I wish her well as there are plenty more like SD out there. As a last thought, given that SD is chairman of the BRS - With probably 50 per cent female membership - is he the right person to represent them? Answers on a postcard please.

Haven't read the article Trooper, but I agree that it sounds like a bit of a MCP remark to which I , as a mere female(!) object. It must be a huge accolade and a feather in her cap to have got such an appointment, so I join with you in wishing her well. Wish I could meet her to tell her so. In the mean time, as to your comments re SD, i am afraid I can o nly say 'You might say that, but I couldn't possibly comment.' But I will be interested to learn what others think.

I completely agree with you trooper. I didn't have an opinion on Steven Day before that piece, now it's a negative one. His comments came across as a rather pathetic and juvenile attempt at humour. Sadly, some men do feel threatened by a successful woman, and will do their best to run her down with bitter comments thinly cloaked in schoolboy humour.

Mr Day comes over as a not very bright/nice person. Initially I thought he had an inferiority complex, but of late I have come to realise it is not a complex. I am a member of the BRS, and his latest missive will be remembered come election time.

Sometimes I think SD speaks before he thinks. Not a bad person but sometimes lacking in tact. Was an MP of course so that might explain it all.

Actually no i don't think he is, or does he do the best for Brits here. A while ago people we had only just met, the husband turned up and asked us if we could have their dog as his wife had just had a serious head injury in an accident. Of course we would. She was in a bad way and spent a lot of time in hospital. Luckily she made a full recovery. After this happened we saw a need, we contacted SD and the BRS to offer our help. We offered that if any Brit had an accident and needed care for their animal whilst they were in hospital we would offer to take the animal for free until they were better. No offer was ever taken up and he failed to make an appointment to visit us as promised. So much for helping the Brits. We felt it was a good offer and we could put something back into our community, clearly he didn't. But then we are not members of the BRS and have no intentions of being.

| oops, Cyprus |Joker, you know the saying that for a woman to do a man's job she has to be better than a man! Equal opportunity is what matters, and this lovely lady who was the object of SD's 'scorn' must be pretty damn good at her job (I assume). |

If you "get away with it" (in court) then it can't be murder! PMT equates to Yuppie Flu and diminished responsibility to many.

For goodness sake. Lighten up. This was just a throwaway amusing comment. Leave your political correctness back in the UK. It doesn't hold any sway here. And quite frankly it's boring and shows a complete misunderstanding of what is really important in this country.

msge 16; 'throwaway amusing comment' not if you are a woman it isn't. Nice to see you are still stuck in the middle ages. It's got nothing to do with political correctness - how about treating women with some respect....would you know about that? Good job you didn't work with some of the women that I have. They'd leave you dead in the water (that seems a suitable term, given the subject of this thread).

Another of his 'cheap shots' against somebody unable to defend herself against his stupidity. Thank God the majority of posters here appreciate what a 'plonker' he is by such a statement and which indicates his total ignorance of the controls within HM Forces regarding the 'Rules of Engagement' imposed by every specific situation. I well remember his abject performance at the EGM of the BRS at the Pia Bella Hotel trying to get a vote on a withdrawn motion. It beggars belief he was a MP - but, there again - perhaps not!!

It's very easy Stephen Day - why not print an apology to the readers based on the feelings shown on this site. It's a shame he thinks that our servicewomen (some of whom have served with distinction in Afghanistan recently.. one of whom was killed in Afghanistan) are not up to the job. Go on - support our servicemen and women and print an apology and save some face.

I will add to my previous comment that I quite enjoy Mr Day's articles (they are deliberately provocative which makes them entertaining as well as informative) and he often says what we are thinking. However, on this occasion he got it wrong - hence the request for an apology....

What a bunch of old women (it's an old saying not a "sexist" comment). Each trying to assert their PC credentials and demonstrate their "feminine side". Or is it about notching up brownie points with the partner ? It's easy to see that the anti-Day brigade is keen to jump on any bandwagon to denigrate someone who at least is trying to improve some aspects of things here. The personal insults hurled at him here show a complete over-reaction to a humorous remark. As for questioning his fitness to be chairman of the BRS. That's riseable and was answered at the last AGM.

Trooper, is it possible for you to either post a link to the article, or at least quote the offending portion? It's not convenient for me to pick up a copy, and I'd love to read what it is that has stirred everyone up so much...

Rottolover; sorry but don't have the offending article to hand, but sure someone on this thread can quote it for you. I'm sure you have got the drift though. As for Geejay; are you sure you are allowed out on your own?

Geejay we're not talking about a couple of misogynistic old farts "joking" about women over a few pints in the pub. We're talking about the Chair of The British Residents Society ( the TRNC government officially recognised ex-Pat representative organisation) printing it in black and white in one of only 2 English language papers. Are we to believe that either a) he doesn't give a toss for that position, or b) he really does have a low opinion of women?

Ref msg 31, or he has such a low opinion of serving HMF personnel (be they male or female). I understand recently a female helicopter pilot was awarded a bravery award for a night casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) whilst under some sustained incoming fire, female nurses have been awarded MCs, etc etc. Mr Day - go back to UK or some other rock and hide under it. My wife and I have have not re-registered with the BRS this year and he is foremost behind those decisions.
