They are shooting up the mountains behind us in Alsancak. May there are a couple of days when they are allowed because of the end of Ramazan?

So be careful when out walking the dog because to may just look like a pigeon to a short-sighted menace with a gun!

Just a few points comparing TRNC to the UK. In TRNC everybody must have a gun licence to own any gun - this is not true in the UK for air weapons. The police are far tougher on issuing licences here than in the UK where the police cannot refuse a gun licence unless they can show good reason - which basically means certain types of criminal record or proven mental instability. In TRNC all hunters must be a member of the Hunting Federation before they can shoot at any living thing. Membership of the Hunting Federation requires passing an exam on safe gun handling and species identification. In addition the Hunting Federation conducts breeding and release programmes for partridge and other species. There is no equivalent organisation in the UK - once you have a gun you can shoot anything without any training, testing or supervision. ....cont

cont... In TRNC it is illegal to fire a gun anywhere within 200 metres of a private house - the the UK it is 50 yds IN THE DIRECTION OF a house, road etc. - you can stand next to a house and shoot away from it. Shooting at pigeon, crows, magpies, rabbits, foxes etc. in the UK is permitted every day except Christmas Day; shooting for game species (grouse, pheasant, partridge, duck etc.) depends on the season but is permitted every day except Sunday in the 3 to 4 month seasons. In TRNC it is restricted to about 35 days total every year and the individual seasons are much shorter. The police in TRNC are far harder on people breaking the shooting laws - in the UK the police don't understand about the shooting laws except for gun ownership. Finally, there is FAR FAR FAR more shooting in the UK than TRNC - but because of the relative size of the UK and the separation of town and country you are far less aware of it

JJ there are loads of illegal hunters with unlicensed weapons. Every year a lot of injuries occur due to poor hunting discipline, getting in front of the guns, shooting at eye level etc. There may be regulations and laws but getting them observed is not the same thing as laws existing. For their part the HF are trying to eradicate this rogue element but in some areas it's so ingrained it's not going to be easy. A blind eye is often turned (mainly because they lost it in a hunting accident).
