Hi, my partner, family and I recently returned from three lovely weeks in TRNC staying in Alsancak. Whilst over there we noticed that no one seemed to have PV electricty panels on their homes despite the never ending sunshine (PV is like solar panels but generate electricity which runs your household or gets "bought" and fed into the national grid. Can you get PV supplied and fitted in TRNC? As electricity is so expensive there we thought that the villas might have it fitted as standard as, somewhere like TRNC, the PV panels and cost would pay for themselves after 5-6 years then after that free electricty (panels are guaranteed 25 years). I'm asking because we thought this might prove a good business venture? In England my partner runs a large electrical contractors and is fully accredited in the installation of PV panels. Does anyone have any opinions on this - all greatly received (good or bad!) Would this work over there, would there be too much red tape? Thanks!

Hi, Great idea, Possible Problems 1) Currently there is no system setup to push electric back into the system, there are digital meters being fitted know which I believe will cope with this but you can't currently sell electric back to Kibtek. 2) Import duties could substantially increase the cost. Just for starters...........good luck though Paul

I understand that the Shinya restaurant in Kucuk Erenkoy not only has a bank of photo-voltaic cells, but they also "sell" their excess back to Kibtek. Martinev

Wish we could it makes more sense i think they have that system on the greek side. Solar panels are good but we have gallons of unused boiling hot water in the summer and cold water in the winter bit crazy really

Thanks for the replies! Looks like it might be a possibility as PV generates electricity even on cloudy days. I know that they have PV in the south and the greek government is pushing through PV subsidies to enable more households to produce their own electricty

Poppy1972, I think it is not possible to sell electricity back to Kib-tek at the moment but it will happen sooner or later. What would be the setting up cost for 5 KVA and 10 KVA set up to run for three hours at full load on average? Any customs duty and vat will be additional. Digital meters are readily available in TRNC. ismet

Poppy ' I know that they have PV in the south and the greek government is pushing through PV subsidies to enable more households to produce their own electricty' This is because all EU governments have an obligation to help reduce the carbon ommisions by a certain date, so they are offering special schemes, its the same as in the Uk and most of Europe.

Check your figures. I think the payback time will be a lot longer than 5-6 years. With no subsidies and not being able to sell the excess, the payback will be much longer.

Oasis at Ayfilon near Dipkarpaz use it, but then they have no connection to the national grid anyway and it's stops having to listen to the generators in an otherwise very peaceful area. I would love to see it hear and would be interested to get a quote.

Poppy1972 I know two people who have had PV fitted in the Uk and are really pleased with it. so if you could do a bit of 'homework' and come up with some rough indication of costs here in the TRNC (including import duty) - i would be interested to know, as it may still turn out to be worthwhile considering despite the fact of not being readily able to sell excess back to kibtek. I realise that this would be a long term investment but with the cost of electricity always on the increase & the prospect of powercuts it could be an alternative. Good luck with the idea.

It is not really a question of selling the excess to Kib-tek but rather use them as storage i.e. sell them daytime and buy back night time. Its reallty storage that is costly to install and costly to maintain. ismet

I have been asking about this for a long time, surely someone can put pressure on the goverment to reduce all fees to encourage more wide spread usage. Mabye all new houses in the future to have them fitted by law?. Let them show the world TRNC is not backward. please please go ahead I would love to have it. Good luck M

We have full PV and battery system plus tracker and have used it for 6 years, runs all our needs for 2 cabins plus pumps etc. Initially expensive to set up but has now paid for itself. As far as we know there are only a couple of people providing this here in TRNC for general sale. Very much needed another knowledgable technician who can supply and fit. Go for it but do your homework first! Good luck.

Hello, my name is Peter and we designed several and different solar system in the TRNC since 2001. I could write a lot of things about "grid tie", "off grid", "greek side", "UK", "Sinya", "Oasis at Ayfilon"... also about "tracking", "excess", "produce own electricity".... and economy... But maybe you check our website http://www.kibsolar.com first...

@Delikomsu - the system you have is a lorentz tracker and outback inverter with mutlu batts, right? I think peter and andi form AGD Solar Trading installed it? Please email me some pictures if possible- and if you want, so I can add them to http://www.kibsolar.com website in the reference section - Unfortunatelly I lost the pictures we made during installation... Thank you very much Henrik hp@kibsolar.com

@martinev: Sinya does not "sell" as there is no payment (and law) for the electricity to feed into the grid. Sinya saves allot on their monthly bill through overproduction. This is only if your meter is able to spin or count backwards, so that the pv system may "push" the overproduced electricity back into the grid. This you may "consume" for free in the nighttime.. at daytime the pv system will generate electricity with 3 possibilities: - not enough - meaning less grid consumption + smaller electricity bills - as much as you consume (daytime) - this will make you use only electrity in the nightime form the grid - more than you consume - depending on the ammount you will pay less or nothing for your electricity bill. In cyprus, with electricity prices as high as now, and pv systems beeing as cheap as ever, it would make sense to install such a system.. for homes without grid connection, a pv + battery system is beneficial and pays back soon. hope it helps regards
