Jehovas witness's can and do donate blood some will just do not accept it.........As I understand it , it is down to the individual... I know pleanty of people who do not donate blood, but would be quite happy to accept it if it was needed..............

It is all due to a Biblical verse which prohibits the taking in of the blood of another. Which, let's face it made sense in the days when no one knew about blood groupings and how dangerous one blood group could be to another. As we now know the right blood group received can save a life, but unfortunately the JW's have not changed their stance.

Marion, why does it matter to you what and individual religon says, Do you complain that Jews and Muslims forbid the eating of pork as it is classed as dirty meat...Have they changed there stance! Some Religious sects forbid the use of contraceptives. Have they changed there stance! need I go on........As time goes by who dictates changing stance............

Hey lovinit, settle down. I doubt it 'matters' to Marion...she was only offering an explanation, and the only judgemental or opinionated part of it was the word 'unfortunately', unfortunately. I completely agree with her opinion. As I see it, the big difference here is that blood transfusions involve saving (or losing) lives, which the eating of pork products doesn't. The contraceptive issue with Catholics is a whole nother ball game, and there wouldn't be a great many thinking people who would agree that the church's stance on contraception, especially in third world countries, is harmful rather than helpful. I know a lot of Catholics who all practice contraception. What I find so distasteful about the JWs' position on transfusions is that they deny such life-saving techniques to children who can't speak for themselves. An adult who denies it personally is one thing, and I'd respect that decision, but not when it comes to insisting that a child must die for an adult's belief.

I worked with a girl years ago, both her parents were JW and when she was a baby she needed medical treatment. It was a life and death situ, it took a while i am told but her mum gave in and went against her JW beliefs and allowed the op to happen. The result was that my friend did end up with a small walking disability, but lucky for her ,her mum stepped up at the last moment. Otherwise we would never have known each other. I had another friend who when she got breast cancer, her hubby left her, took every penny they had and moved in with some JW. She was devestated. Always to sides.

A friends sister's little baby was very unwell and they were JW, and refused my friend was devastated. Even today they have very little contact from them come Birthdays and Christmas. To be honest they distanced themselves from they whole family. Spider,X

The JW's would occasionally knock my door, I would allow them to speak to me until it got to the point where they asked my profession..I'm a Haematologist, where are you going? I asked as they walked smartly away.....

Thanks for your contribution Rottolover. You hit it on the head. I fully understand religious teachings and how adherents are meant to follow the individual rules, but the world moves on, we change, knowledge changes - and incidentlaly in the days of the Old and New Testaments they were also members of the Flat Earth Society - but we don't believe THAT any more do we. So that is why I say 'unfortunately' because if people's lives are put at risk by a belief which would appear to be outmoded, then it is 'unfortunate'. truth is supposed to be freedom and I think it is such a shame if someone is shackled in an ancient understanding of life . One of the questions with which i was challenged at uni was 'Is God in front of or behind history?' It has taken me a lifetime of stydy and questioning to find truth and I am hardly there. I may have a couple of pieces of the jigsaw but will never have them all. sorry I am prattling, but I do get upset where beliefs stand in the way of love.

i have a friend who had a blood transfusion a few years back 80,s to be precise, who died from the aids virus contracted via transfusion, I also know of a number of others who more recently have contracted hep b and hep c from transfusions. And not that long ago a lady from TRNC was deported as she had contracted hep C from a transfusion in the 80, s still fighting her corner, I beleive to return. I reguarly give blood and have no issue with it, just find it aborant, that people are so judgemental.......who is right and who is wrong I will leave it to the JUDGES to tell us...............awaiting your replies.............
