The climate in the east Med is getting warmer this Autumn! Turkish navy and air force are planning exercises in the area beginning Sept. 15 meanwhile Greek Cyprus has received support both from Russia and Israel and according to a recent report Russia will send two nuclear-powered submarines to protect the island’s right to exploration in its maritime zone. http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=crisis-in-the-mediterranean-2011-09-09

First they have to go through the Bosphorus! In any case this can only be very good news for Turkish politics, and relationships with the West. What the Russian "nuclear" submarines going to do? Sink Turkish Nato force ships carrying out exercises in the Mediterranean? As for Israel, they continue to carry on this way, and for the first time in their history they might have to confront a proper military force, and not a band of improperly trained, inadequately armed "fellahs" they faced for the past 6 decades. If that happens? By the time US and Europe negotiates or moves in to stop it, there will not be any Israel left to save!

Who says the Russians have to go through the Bosporus to get to the Med? They have many ports not just in the black sea! Also do not underestimate Israel's military force! They are given the latest tech from the US and also manufacture their own. They have helped Turkey modernize their air force and ground forces also supplying them drones. They know Turkeys military inside out, although outnumbered by soldier numbers they are just as strong as Turkey. However a war seems unlikely since the United States Sixth Fleet is located in the Med and will most probably intervene at any sign of conflict. Since Turkish warships were built by America, they should't have any problem stopping them!

yrys88; You are wrong on two counts. Firstly Turkey has started manufacturing her own drones for a while now. They sent Israeli made (useless) drones for repairs almost a year ago, paid for the repairs but still have not got them back! Second point, Turkey had started manufacturing her own warships, destroyers and even submarines not too long ago. They are also the only other manufacturer of the biggest size - longest range mortars in Europe (the other one is France) After the experiences of Cyprus invasion The Turkish arms production had increased and developed tremendously. So much so one their main export income is from arms! Erdoğan is no fool when it comes to military matters. He is well aware of the capabilities and the strength of the Turkish armed forces (I feel so are many Europen allies)

I am sure the Russian Nuclear Submarine Fleet is based in Sevastapol, Ukraine on the Black Sea. So they would have to ask Turkey permission to sail the Bosphorus. And if Turkey made better friends with Ukraine..................

So Russia is coming up against the NATO allies. How riseable and unlikely. Beware of propaganda. Mind you, Russia and Israel are quite good at stirring up things. But the USA will not allow Israel to attack a NATO partner. Nor any other belligerent like Russia. It will also persuade Greece to duck out. Easy, as NATO would disintegrate if allies started attacking each other to the detriment of all. Any country can have ships in international waters. Any incident would give rise to inquiries and UN mediation. Even NATO intervention. Result, brinkmanship and a face off ! Do these people want to start a holy war ? Just look at the map. Israel is faced virtually on all sides by those that hate or at least dislike their bullying and intolerance. We live in interesting times !

coachie: I think you need to study history a little more to understand what is going on. You seem to be very ignorant of many facts; Fact:1 When Russians started to get rid of Jews (long before Germans started an ethnic cleansing) most of trhem emigrated to USA and UK but Turkey was the only Muslim country that welcomed their refugees and helped those who preferred not to travel too far. Fact;2 When an Edict of Expulsion was issued against the Jews of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella (March 31, 1492). It ordered all Jews of whatever age to leave the kingdom by the last day of July. It is estimated that of the 165,000 or so Jews who were forced to leave Spain, around 90,000 were settled in Turkey which was part of the Muslim Ottoman Empire! Fact:3 Turkey has been the only Muslim country who have kept very good ties with Israel over many decades, both in trading and military terms. A large Jewish population resides in Turkey, with their Synagogues, and freedom to practce their faith.

I have just heard from an unnamed source close to the defense ministry that the TRNC are currently building their own submarine fleet out of a backstreet workshop just outside Esenetepe. Mehmet and his brother are just putting the finishing touches to their petrol powered 2 litre version, and final trials will be taking place next week, assuming they can obtain some extra tubes of silicon to make the double glazing units fit a bit better.

Concluısion: You are totally wrong in your belief that people hate Israel because they are "Jewish". I have two very close Jewish friends who live in Istanbul - but also hate Israels political stance concerning the aid ships! Has it occurred to you that perhaps the state of Israel have really been acting like the bullies they are, long enough to have everyone except US start to dislike them. Finally, even as Turks and Cypriots we had always been taught that Israel and Jews are not the sdame thing. The first one is a state, predominantly run by Jews, the latter is a faith which is practiced by many non-Israeli Jews as well. If you were correct in your statement, then Jews would have been hated everywhere and not just in Israel!

you have to question why russia in the first place are backing greece. is it because it asked russia asked turkey first, and turkey said no way are we drilling until we get reconition in trnc. which leaves the sneaky greeks asking for help from the russians.because they have been refused help from nato, euro union on drilling rights. remember one thing cyprus is the worlds largest floating warship. history says, whoever owns cyprus controls the middle east. greek, israel, russian alliance is on the cards.

Jeez, the same subject must have about 9/10 threads running now ... Turkey is on an *absolute* hiding to nothing,here.. This patch of Ocean has 'B all' to do with Turkey and a HECK of a lot to do with Israel.. Turkey is NOT going to start blockading Russian subs using the Ukrainian Naval ports - any more than it would blockade Russian merchant shipping bound for Novorossiysk ... A LOT of 'silly' talk going on here :(

Big Oz what Rochie knows about Mid East politics can be written on a postage stamp but what he knows about UK benefits can fill an encyclopedia. They don't hate the Jews they hate the state of Israel who has continually used force to expand its boundaries, committed countless acts of brutality treated the Palestinians worse than they would treat a dog and don't give a damn for public opinion. The writing is on the wall, I believe strongly there will be an escalation of hostilities in the region, Egypt is already becoming overheated over the peace treaty, whether Turkey will become physically involved I doubt it but you never know.
