There have recently been a few children suffering from ear infections after using the communal pool in our complex in the TRNC. Further investigations tell us that the pool company have been servicing the pool 3 times a week in the Summer, and since the problems were reported have been on-site nearly every day checking the chemical balance, but still the problems persist. The pool companies name and complex location are not relevant, but does anyone have any idea why the problem persists, and what action we can take ?

One of the main causes is people using pool without first showering off. Suntan oil particularly forms an emulsion in pools that various nasties adore.

Chlorine chemicals strip the protective wax from the ears, thus leaving the ear canal open to infection. The heat makes things worse. Encourage the use of ear plugs if you are prone to ear infections

If you visit the hospital as i had to with my son in the past, they are very good at taking details of the pool involved and contacting the relevent authorities to follow up and investigate. They authorities are usually very good at identifying the problem and sorting it promptly.

Message 3 is spot on. Very few people realise the importance of showering first. Shower prior for Pool Hygiene and after for Personal Hygeine. Golden Rule.

Are you sure the pool is the culprit... it may well be but if the pool chemicals are balanced it should be fine.

It's as common as a cold when on holiday in a warm climate. Shower first and shower after using anti-bacterial soap. It helps 90% of the time.

Showering before swimming also washes sweat away which contains ammonia. Ammonia combines with chlorine to produce chloramines or combined chlorine. Combined chlorine contributes nothing to pool hygiene. If your pool company cannot determine which is combined chlorine and which is free chlorine (i.e. they only test for total chlorine) it sends a false message that there is enough chlorine in the water. Regular shocking is the only answer, otherwise change to a non-chlorine method such as Aligator or Zerochlor.

In the UK public pools water has to be checked every few hrs. Depends on how many people are using the pool as well, to decide what is needed. I am guessing you need to be testing the water more often. Why not get one of those cheap test kits for aorund a fiver in the UK and test the water before your kids go in.?
