A large number of Brits are leaving the TRNC for obvious reasons, they REALLY will miss us when all the money we put into this country starts running dry, still what goes around comes around!

So true Mambosun, What do I reckon? Not a chance. Lets face it, the ROC have only done this because of external pressure and a drastic fall in foreign purchase which has had a massive impact on their economy. Even the builders have asked for this to happen and new laws to be implemented to restore confidence.

Mambosun, every one we speak to in UK tell us we are far better off here than going back there, so keep knocking it and enjoy the rundown, overpriced, dismal UK :=)

'A large number of Brits are leaving the TRNC for obvious reasons, they REALLY will miss us when all the money we put into this country starts running dry, still what goes around comes around! Mambosun I think you overestimate the value of expats to the TRNC economy. Your numbers are small. True some restaurants that cater almost exclusively for expats and largely run by expats would disappear. Brits tend to stay in mid range hotels i.e. Pia Blla. The same tourists would be back. But the economy is supported by Turkey,Turkish tourism, and by the trade from the TCs living in in Europe mainly the UK. There are more TCs in London then in Cyprus!

Visitor according to TRNC Government figures (2006/7) the ex-pat population provides 40% of total revenue to the economy... not something they could easily do without.

| earnings from tourism were estimated at around US$405 million, equivalent to 43 percent of the region's GDP. Since gambling is permitted, the TRNC serves as an important holiday destination for tourists coming from Turkey, where casinos are banned. The Turkish zone is also a popular shopping destination for mainland Turks who take advantage of the region's lower taxes. | The GDP for the TRNC is around 850 US million. Are you telling me that the '2000' or so expats have provided around 370 million US in revenue. Wow they can stay! |

As an ex-pat having lived here for 7 years now I do think we over estimate our "importance" (if that's the word?) to the KKTC. Granted we pay our taxes, buy houses etc., but in the large overall scheme of things, even if we all upped sticks and left it would be like throwing a pepple into a pond. After a few minutes the pond calms down and the pebble has disappeared from view. Another tranche of people would arrive (and have a far better time of it with regard to rogue builders because the "good" builders have eased most of them out) and the Brit community would be just a memory in the history of the KKTC. However, the charities would miss us dreadfully. As a Russian woman said to me last year "We don't do charity"

I think they are very wise not to believe the hype. Don't forget down South takes over their 6 months presidency of the EU in 2012 and it will look good and give them some brownie points.
