Hi, I reluctantly find myself in a position where I may need to open a bank account in NC soon. Can anyone advise as to the level of difficulty and what kind of paper work will I need to bring along. Also do the banks do Euro or Sterling accounts for non residents. Thanks in anticipation. DD

Hi Mersin, Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, as a non-resident I will not have a utility bill for my address in TRNC. I suppose I can bring one from home, but I cannot see it as being of much use. I will give it a go anyway. DD

Hi Dublinderm, We opened our first accounts (Sterling, Euro and TL) before we had actually moved out here to live. The bank took the address of the hotel where we were staying for their records! We just needed our passports to open the accounts.

Hi Dublinderm I use HSBC and have found them to be very good. They also have an internet facility that can be accessed from anywhere and all your banking needs inc transfers can be done from home. Their staff in Gurne are most helpful.

Remember if you use HSBC they are obliged to hand over all your details to the HRMC tax authorities in the UK, dont know how this works for Irish citizens etc. If you want to stay off their radar might be better going for a Turkish bank. The UK tax authorities are gathering all this information dont know how they plan to use it but i am sure it will not be for any nice purpose !

Michael Msg 11 - More important than looking for the highest payer is how secure they are in these times. (Unless you are a gambler in which case invest in a casino.)

msg 7: Why would the HSBC have to inform the UK authorities? The HSBC bank in the TRNC is an offshoot of HSBC Turkey, just like Garanti Bank and others mentioned on this site. What makes them different to the rest?
