Coffeeman, You are entitled to smoke anywhere you like as long as I don't have to put up with your bad habbit i.e. you should not smoke in public places. ismet

Lambousa market was very busy in the summer and people would smoke whilst looking at stalls. Times like that when you wish a good fart would brew and give it to them.

Ralph, that's a great idea! Let me make it even better. I'll do this nex Saturday if at least 10 other people say they'll join me. 1) we all get up an hour early. 2) we all eat a whole tin of Heinz beans for breakfast. 3) we all go to Lambousa market. 4) we all spend the morning sidling up to anyone smoking a cigarette and farting on them. Who's up for it?

Elko, Speaking as a non smoker, I have to disagree with your comments in msg 9, I really do think that in a" public place" a member of the public should be able to carry on any legal activity and as smoking is legal they should be able to smoke ! This for me is a civil liberties issue. In a private place the rules of the owner should apply !

I agree, it should be regulated more strictly. As it is I don't want to go to any open air theatre because someone is likely to come and smoke under my nose. I went to Japan last summer and people were not allowed to smoke even on the roads, only allowed to smoke at designated spots. ismet

Smoking is indeed a legal and habitual pastime. However, the health issues that are very clear and well understood should make any intelligent and concientious individual refrain. Unfortunately the young and less aware of us are easily convinced by the marketing strategies of the tabacco giants. Certainly smoking in confined atmosphere, ie indoors in the presence of others exposes those inocent individuals to the toxic elements of burning tobacco and its additives. This is not fair and therfore the smoking ban is proper, fair and justified. Furthermore, the generally unwelcome smell and after burn implications upon air quality, personal odour, and general wellness should and does put more and more people of this most distastfull and harmfull of habits. What a sure way to burn money. Sell your health to the devil and come out smelling of an ash tray....No thanks

No... alcohol issues are not ok. We are all or should be so much aware of the dangers of alcohol addiction. The marketing strategies of the multi national producers are very good indeed at convincing us, particularly the young that we need to drink to feel good, appear young and sexyr become happier and that addiction is just not important.

Newlad: Yes and no. The smoking ban was originally an EU directive, but the TRNC implemented their own smoking ban, possibly in an attempt to show that they were capable of complying with EU regulations and therefore worthy of membership when (and if) the subject arose.

Newlad. No smoking ban in Turkey also they are not in EU. Just had a holiday there, no smoking allowed round the pool, restaurant, bar, or in the childrens play area at the Hotel we stayed in.
