I have noticed since i have been on this forum that many people visit or have moved to thailand, and now one to mexico, nobody ever says anything bad about thailand, but the trnc is always getting knocked big time.

surely thailand is more of a third world country than north cyprus, what has thailand got to offer that the trnc has not, maybe i'm wrong but the standard of living cant be better there can it ?.

Maybe cheaper Buddhism creates good community. I love the place, but when I wanted to go foreigners culd not buy property. Now I haven't got the wherewithal, but it is a lovely place and has a beauty and hitory that is special. Or as I say, maybe it is th epricces! And probably very little bingo and karaoke, unless the people who go start it.

I would suggest this trend is as a result of a much higher cost of living coupled with the very volatile exchange rate against a broadly fixed pension payment and therefore people are moving to areas where they hope their income will go further.

A receipt for dissaster!!

You are right I am sure message 3. But the trouble is (as we found here) that the cost of living goesup and then one is trapped. (Our reasons for coming here are probably unique - medical reasons). going to Thailand or Malaysia is fine, but if it does not agree with one - huge humidity in both places - then you probably can't get back anywhere.

When i looked into it, day to day living is cheaper in thailand but to rent a good villa was four times as expensive, and i find most women in thailand ugly as sin.

I'm no where near pension age but i can have a better living standard overall in north cyprus.

The TRNC is like the "black and white" part and Thailand is like the "colour" part..........

Interesting ( negative) criteria for settling somewhere..

>>i find most women in xxxxx ugly as sin. <<

Steele77, one can eat out / live in beautiful parts of Thailand for a fraction of the cost of Cyprus... if you can put up with the women ;)

I must admit, it's the first time I've ever heard most Thai women described as "ugly" - far from it, I think.

In an ex pat area in thailand, the only villa that i could find which was kitted out well and had a nice pool was £2000 a month but it was shit hot, with a tropical looking back garden around the pool, thank god no thai ladies included.

In north cyprus i can get the same sort of thing for 1000 a month.

But this thread confirms that everyone loves thailand, infact i don't anyone who has ever knocked it.

maybe you have to go there to understand, or maybe i have watched to much banged up abroad.

Dont know about Thailand, but like the rest of Europe many older UK citizens are returning to their places of birth yes for health reasons, but also for family and yes in some cases especially in Spain because they have been conned.

Please lets not see all the usual negative comments about TRNC. I have had properties in many areas of the world and can I say that spain was the worst experience by far. TRNC you just have to grin and bear it, as the cypriots do.

Yes I love thailand - well the time that I spent there, which was of course, a holiday! I would love to go to Chiang Mai to live, but.......

However, as to thai ladies, I feel they are far more beautiful, feminine and dainty compared to we 'white honkies' , especially those Kratoi Boys! They are more beautiful than the average beauty queen, but then not sure whether others might allow that they are 'women' in the full domestic, wife, child bearing bit.

Yep, a beautiful place, but the one thing that might put me off is trying to learn Thai!

The grass on the other side of the fence is always greener, no matter which side of the fence you are viewing it from.

The trick is not to look over the fence to often and be happy with your own side, after all it was you who chose to live on that side!

well i checked the girls out on you tube a while back, and i can meet much prettier girls in the uk.

but what i will say is as a whole they have much better slimmer bodies.

It depends how old you are and what you look like, if your over fifty and you can pull a girl who is twenty and slim in thailand good luck to you.

Take the girls out of it what is better, maybe climate, maybe food ?

in thailand you can only buy apartments as a foreigner, if you want a house villa or land it has to be put in thai name usually girlfriend, sounds more risky than the trnc.

I read many sad stories.

stelee77.

I recently had the opportunity to stay in Hua Hin in Thailand.(3 hours from Bangkok.)

This is where the Thai Royal family have there summer palace

What a fantastic place. It is clean, excellent roads, no rubbish,a modern shopping mall that would shame most in the UK,The healthcare is superb,.Leading hotels at world beating rates.

Food superb and extremely well priced £6 for an excellent steak. Beer less than one pound per pint

Beaches to die for and no one in sight. Accomodation to Florida standards with luxury condominions

on the beach which can be rented for £400 to £500 pounds per month.

There is absolutely no comparison with The TRNC.

Reccommended as one of the top ten places in the world to retire to. Income from outside Thailand

can legally be tax free.

Could not reccommend anywhere more highly.

I personally do not like Bangkok, but the new airport must rank about the best in the world.

Distance and travel cost is a probl

Msg 30.

Had two weeks in May in Chaing Mai, and then a further 4 weeks in July in Hua Hin.

Speaks for itself. Fabulous.

Golfer? Take a look at the website for Royal Hills Golf Resort ( £37 double room with breakfast)

Look at the National Park around Nayok Nakhon (2 hours from Bangkok.)

Emirates flight from Newcastle to Bangkok with a 3 hour stay over in Dubai. Easy!

Absolutely NO comparison.

@Msg 23 and Msg25.

There were no mobile phones, broadband internet, LCD TVs, skype,

There were also no double 2 lane road between girne and lefkosa and famagusta and guzelyurt.

Smoking was permitted indoors!

I can go on... So us cypriots should be very ethernally greatful for all the blessings ex-pat community arrival has brought upon us? Please...

I was playing turkish version of bingo in 1980s, karaoke is a cultural phenomenon and is not an indication of anything.

@Hector, do you have any statistical proof to back your hypothesis on the amount of charity donations done by the expat community vs the local people? I believe you are grossly misinformed.

I am in no way trying to insult anybody, I am merely pointing out the misinterpretation of 'cause vs coincidence'.

When all you here is 100 % good about a place for a long period it speaks for itself, it cant be wrong.

I'm not worried if i don't buy property, that does not even come into it.

I have to admit thailand looks a lot of fun, and you can have a lot of control of your life.

I'll move to north cyprus if it feels wrong, of to thailand like the others, for me either will beat england.

I can get excited about thailand but then something always kicks in and says crazy idea.

But i know i love cyprus.

In thailand i can go out everynight and watch muay thai fights, or ping pong ball shows, it would certainly be more fun, but cyprus could be more realistic if i ever wanted to start a family or build a home.

I just wonder how many people would chip of to thailand or south america if they could.

Thailand is wonderful but it does have its problems for ex-pats.

- You cannot own property

- Property of the standard we Westerners expect is very expensive to rent

- Annual visa renewal requires departure from the country

- There is a lot more crime than in TRNC and the number of scams aimed at 'farangs' is unbelievable

- The Thai name for foreigners (farang) is not a term of respect

- Don't even think about criticising those things the Thais hold dear (The King, Buddhism et. al.)

- It has a very volatile and unstable political situation

- The standard of driving is appalling - far worse than here

When i looked into it they had tightened up on the non immigration multi entry visas, you could before just say you are visiting a friend, now for a year visa it has to be marriage business or you have to be over fifty, as long as you can get this first visa and you have money there are ways to stay without border hops, l think i know a way to get my first visa to get me going if i ever decide to go there.

Your right good property is expensive.

i could build a place in north cyprus without problems, maybe other than dodgy workforce.

My fear would be investing money there, then thinking what the hell am i doing here, but as some one pointed out you could think that anywhere. Or even not investing and just thinking of the fun i could have had somewhere else.

don't worry about that i have it all sussed.

We all have big choices to make in life, and i have made many bad ones a lot of them in the past i put down to age and experience.

I have to make the biggest decisions ever over the next few years and i want to get them right so i don't look back in regret, the amount of people i know who say if only, i don't want to be one of them, or end up in a situation i cant get out of.

I know there will always be some regrets and what ifs, but some people might say if i'm going to mess up my life i'm going to have fun doing it, who dares wins.

But lets be honest how many people end up in the right place in the end and wish they had worked it out earlier.

North cyprus is a hard one because no one knows the outcome in the end, and if that will suit them.

stelee,

Most of us have been victims of the TRNC property buying scenario. Notwithstanding

If you cannot see the value of the unbiased advice that you have been given.

If you are only partly serious of a comparison of where to live in retirement.

Check out "Conde Nast " as to the best places in the world to retire to.

Better still......go take a visit. You would wish to, if you had serious intent.

Finally Buddism! The Spirituality of the people is awesome. The temples mindblowing.

Start with Hua Hin. I promise that you will be blown away,at prices you would never believe

The prices quoted on this board, are figments of posters imagination. Visit The Land of Smiles.

I have been a few times to Thailand and thouroughly enjoyed it and will go again. And I don't mean 2 weeks from the Kuoni brochure in the local Hilton. I have visited many different places and, some of the time at least, lived with indigenous people.

But a permanent move there is a very different proposition. Not out of the question if I was still in England and wondering where to go - but I like it here and so far see no need to move on. So living here and visiting Thailand once or twice a year works for me.

If its about Ladyboys, so....it happens. Look at the gender rearrangements in the UK.

I challenge anyone on Cyprus 44 to go to Hua Hin for two weeks.

no i dont really prefer Cyprus, i started going in 1990, very few Brits, the last time i was there was 1999, loads of Brits, families with babies, British style pubs, food etc, it just lost its charm. All places change, what you may find now , will be wonderful and exciting, just as im sure many people said about Cyprus 20 yrs ago\?. I will always remember a couple i met on my first trip who said it was their last time in Thailand as it had become so commercial , their next stop would be Cambodia or Vietnam, which maybe, has now also become a bit commercial. At the time i could not understand their statement, years later i did. Whatever my view, you must go , at least for a visit

That does look like a nice holiday, but we are talking full time living, i don't fancy living like tarzan, but saying that now the seven months of doom and gloom have kicked in here in the uk i would rather live anywhere warm and attractive rather than here.

carrabbian is becoming a popuar choice.

We have returned to the UK after a 5 week holiday in Cyprus

and I know where I would rather be - seeing a blue sky more often than seeing a grey sky

Stelee77 "Caribbean is becoming popular"..... Antigua is nice, Turks and Caicos also lovely, but for me it would have to be the BVI.... forget Jamaica, I was there for 7 weeks,it's more dangerous than the black quarter of New Orleans on a bad day...Blue skies are lovely ,but NO RAIN for 4/5 months is not, the place looks like the Mojave Desert.......

I have been to a few caribbean islands, but not the bvi, but ill check it out on the net, i did think jamiaca was dodgy but i think you have to have your wits about you on most caribbian islands except the turks and the caymans.

closer to europe than thaialnd.

cyprus vs thailand vs carabbian for full time living, tough choice there.

Thailand is fine for holidays different kettle of fish when living there, its full of poverty corruption and deprevation not always apparent to holidaymakers. The royal family have a palace in most resorts not just Hua Hin.I lived there and had a business there.Cost of living is a little less and the beaches are good.Air fares are costly.

You make Thailand sound a perfect cross, between The TRNC and the UK! Where better to retire to?

Pegasus flight from Manchester £230. Emirates Newcastle stop over in Dubai to Bangkok £650.

Bargain IMHO.

Thailand is a hotspot for retired men, but if the women were taken away would it be so appealing, everyone has different opinions on places for instance spain is more popular for ex pats, but personally i think cyprus i smuch better, it's more attractive, they drive on the left, you don't sleep with iron bars and shutters.

If i was in cyprus retired and i wanted to move on, be it to hot or to expensive i would go to thailand or the caribbian. But saying that it all comes down to money.

There will be many more Brits leaving the trnc I reckon, because slowly but surely they are getting more anti Brit here now that its not the majority of brits buying property and holiday making here now and spending as much as money.

A friend with a bar here for the last 2 years or so, has just been informed that they now need a Cypriot partner to continue in business, so just change the law overnight, what's all that about.

Getting ready for Turkey to move in and take complete control in the near future maybe and then we won't be needed.

pembecik it has always been the case here that in order to register a business as a non citizen you either have to deposit a large cash sum as surety against any potential libailites run up by the company or have a citizen business partner with 51% ownership. There is nothing 'new' in these requirments. That your friend would appear to have been operating outside them for two years does not mean these rules are 'new' I am afraid.

Lets be honest no one knows the future of north cyprus and how it will effect the people living there, but if it does go against the ex pats, and they feel it's time to go, but cant face the uk or there home country, they will need a new blue sky country.

Are all these people leaving a sign of the times.

This government seem to take one step forward and ten back. Its so behind the times here with all the paperwork and queuing involved when just wanting to pay something, and now I have read today on here that we have to go back to the government hospital for our blood tests etc, which is absolutely shocking, as I remember many hours of waiting in those dreary corridors on a hot day with everyone trying to jump the queues and babies screaming in mothers arms.

I have been here now for over 11 years and have loved most of the time spent here, but I am even seriously thinking of moving on toward a "New blue sky" somewhere or other. Maybe Thailand even......!!

Making decisions is the hardest thing we ever do.

No blood tests in thailand. I do love cyprus i cant help it, but then saying that i was only there a year, the advice i'm getting about the north is don't do it, you can do better else were.

But then do any of us really listen.
