as with all insurance here in KKTC you get what you pay for, some of the local insurers are not as good and the cover is only up to a certain amount so be careful

Hi Rodger We have met. Comprehensive Insurance is far more expensive here & hasn't until recently come with NCB. The only reduction each year has come with the reducing value of the vehicle. In UK I'd never had anything other than Fully Comp. for years. When we arrived here in 2002 we bought a new car & had been advised by old timers in TRNC to get third party cover. Couldn't quite bring myself to do that on a brand new vehicle. We paid £400 Fully Comp. on a vehicle costing £12750 then. This was far more than we would have paid in the UK at that time. Because of where we lived & full NCBs we were insuring 2 cars for that. Come year 2 renewal & virtually no change in the 2nd year premium we went Third Party & have been ever since. We've never had a scratch on the car. The highest risk in UK. is theft of the vehicle. That's virtually non-existent here. Highest risk is an accident which involves your car being written off. Labour costs are much lower here for repairs.

If your vehicle is a write off here you are unlikely to be alive. If you go the third party route ensure that you are buying enough cover to meet the other driver's costs in the event the accident is your fault. You obviously must make your own decision as to which way to go but think about what I've said. Your decision should consider the risks & the value of your vehicle. You are no longer in the UK. remember. Finally, whichever type of cover you go for, make sure the insurer you choose will actually pay out for your claim in the event of an accident otherwise your premium will be a total waste of money. Like everything in Cyprus, there are good & bad insurers as other posters have indicated.

Just wanted to say that people here have a nasty habit of hitting your car when it is parked in a car park and driving away. This happened to us in Sevener carpark and we would have had to replace the colour-coded bumper and a rear panel. It has also happened to more than one friend of mine.

Insurance 3rd party will cover you upto 50,000 YTL. Fully comprehensive insurance depends on the value of the car, which is more than in the UK. Type of car does not come into it, except if it is a van, bus or taxi etc. With F.C. it does not matter if you have damaged the on your gates whilst leaving, the insurance covers that. You do however need to make sure that the policy has no excess, as this can vary from company to company. However to lower the premium you can ask for excess i.e. £100 which will bring the policy down quite a bit. For more information and quote please e-mail me on: chryscyprus@hotmail.co.uk

The 50,000 YTL is public liability to third parties and does not cover the costs of repairing your own car.... that would have to come off the other parties insurance (if they have some) so if you have a valuable car it's not really good enough cover; unless you are so fabulously wealthy that it matters not.... I don't know many people that this applies to... As the driving as witnessed on an almost daily basis is beyond a joke, I think fully comp is the only sensible choice...
