Good post this one, I have been looking for such a policy and after taking a few local quotations and looking at the site, I have just taken out a policy with them.

I have an apartment. I was told that if say, my apartment caught fire and damaged other apartments in the block, my insurance doesn't need to cover any liability for the other apartments as they would have to claim on their insurance if they have one. That TRNC law doesn't put the onus of liability on me to compensate others even though it was my fault. Is that correct?

If the fire starts in your apartment, ie: it is your fault, you are liable for damage caused to others. A Third Party neighbour liability policy will give you cover against claims from other owners. Any insurance company selling policies in the TRNC must to be a member of te TRNC Insurance association, as I understand it.

Hi Martin In North Cyprus ;any kind of water or fire damage that you cause to a neigbouring property is your responsibility. The law on this aspect there is not much different from UK..Just to be on the safe side I just spoke to a solicitor that I know in Famagusta and he confirmed that the liability does exist. If the liable party was insured the insurer would cover the loss amount up to the insurance limit agreed. I hope this helps. Kind regards Mehmet Mimoglu

As I said in my earlier reply, you need Third Party Neighbour Liability cover. Can Sigorta offer this cover. Can companies who operate from abroad offer and honour this cover? Are they members of the TRNC Insurance Association? if not, I believe that they cannot legally operate. carol@cansigorta.com
