Could anyone recommend a book or literature which provides an accurate and impartial account of the events leading up to the creation of TRNC?

'Accurate' and Impartial' sadly are 2 adjectives rarely found in any accounts relating to the 'Cyprus problem' and creation of the TRNC. Good luck anyway and hope Newlad's link proves helpful.

I have read several books about the history of Cyprus. One given by a Cypriot friend was 'The Genocide Files' by Harry Scott Gibbons. Having read this I bought 'The Cyprus Conspiracy' by Brendan O'Malley from Amazon. I won't make a comment on either, simply to say that I found them interesting and despite the people who knock 'The Genocide Files', both books tell a similar story. I have also read 'The Death of a Friendship' by Turkan Aziz. This was written by a Turkish Cypriot nurse and was very interesting.

A good introduction can be found in 'The Cyprus Enigma' by Ray Sanderson, its been through several editions (my copy is from 2004) I would also recommend 'The Cyprus Conspiracy' by Brendon O'Malley & Ian Craig, bear in mind it was written after some facts were facts came to light under the '30 years rule' in the UK. An excellent writer on Cyprus history is Makarios Drousiotis, he's written several books and has a website (in Greek, Turkish, and English) where you can order them: http://www.makarios.eu. For what you want I'd recommend his book 'Cyprus 1974 - Greek Coup and Turkish Invasion' though for historical background his book on 'The First Partition - Cyprus 1963/4' is worth a look. He also has some very insightful articles on his website about the current talks. Finally, you might want to look at 'Echos from the Dead Zone' by Yiannis Papadakis for a more anthropolgical look. All these books attempt to give an even-handed account of Cypriot History.

Thanks to all for your recommendations. Paul's initial suggestion proved extremely informative. I will work my way through some of the other recommendations over the winter months.

If you want to read a very good account of what happened in 1974 I would recommend "30 Hot Days" by Mehmet Ali Birand.

If you want some history from the US ambassador ito Nicosia whilst Cyprus was still a UK colony some very revealing information here, much of it makes a complete nonesense of the view that "the Greeks started it". http://dosfan.lib.uic.edu/ERC/frus/frus58-60x1/15cyprus2.html
