Bugsy found this for you ... might be worth giving them a call or fax your query to Cyprus.. Ministry of Health, 10 Markou Drakou Street, 1448 Lefkosia Telephone: +357 22 400207 or +357 22 305354 Fax: +357 22 305346 Web site: http://www.moh.gov.cy If you are on a state UK pension you get the treatment free but you also need your EHIC card, but with an address for NC not sure. If your not on a state UK pension depending upon your savings you will have to contribute to the cost, but best to find out first. Good luck

bugsy (mess 1) If you are a British National you are entitled to treatment as an EU Citizen but as dalartokat says you will need a European Health Insurance Card! which will probably be worthless in the TRNC! but with this card the ROC will have to treat you! May I wish you the very best of luck!

For more information on the European Health Card I suggest you read the following information: http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/Introduction.aspx I think it will confirm that this can be used only for emergency treatment or sudden illness during "holiday visits" Everything I have read about health care in the South is positive and treatment prices are said to be very reasonable. However whilst Cypriots, North or South and those paying contributions have subsidised health care, those that do not contribute or are not resident will pay higher rates. Have you health insurance that will cover treatment in the ROC? If you know what treatment is necessary, I am sure you will get information from the actual hospital carrying out the treatment as to costs. I hope you get the information you are seeking as well as the treatment needed. Take care.

The best place in the south for cancer treatment is the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre in Nicosia. without a doubt. They will not, however, treat you without payment if you do not have an RoC medical card. You cannot get a medical card unless you have residency in the south. EHIC cards do not, to my knowledge, cover ongoing treatment like chemotherapy. It has not been my experience, in spite of what one poster said, that private medical treatment in the south comes under the heading of 'cheap'! Far from it, and this theory is supported by the number of Greek Cypriots who cross the border for diagnostic tests and treatment at places like NEU for example. Many GCs are paying for medical treatment as their system is not the same as the NHS in UK, free at point of delivery, for everybody. Feel free to e-mail me off board if you need further info: butlerinlapta@hotmail.com

Message 8: you are nit picking! Message 5 says that 'it is said to be reasonable'. Reasonable, in my view, means cheaper than the alternative, which is the TRNC in this instance. Why would anybody, especially when they are sick, want to go through all the hassle of crossing the border, trailing around government departments and trying to find alternatives there unless it was impossible to get the necessary treatment here? On top of this to then find that the costs were higher over the border? My advice is based upon up to date knowledge of the situation on both sides and I am very happy to give more specific information to the original enquirer if it would be of assistance. You are simply muddying the waters and adding precisely nothing of value. End of story!

Bugsy, Please ring Help Those With Cancer Association/Tulips and ask to speak to Ozge (she is one of the few that speak english there), explain you situation and get her to find out. The Association does take people across to the South for treatment but I do not know how it works. Tel: 0392 227 0585 Email: kanser.cancer@hotmail.com If there is an urgency in your request please tell them as it is their first day back after Bayram and are very busy. If you experience any problems, please email: tulipscarole@yahoo.com We can try to push them for you, but try first as see how you get on. Sue

We crossed last year, someone with a heart condition. They treated us like dog poo. Made us wait while people jumped the queue. Spoke to us like we were worse than dog poo. We left there feeling we had been racially abused. Returned to the good old TRNC where we were given the red carpet treatment. The doctors here were surprised that my relative made a full recovery. Hopefully you may be treated better but don't hold your breath and don't tell them you live in THE OCCUPIED AREAS. I really hope that you receive the help and treatment you deserve.

I have had treatment twice in the South, and couldn't have been treated better. Very reasonably priced, cheaper than here and a third of the price for the same thing in England. The staff and surgeon all knew I lived in the North, and in fact one of the first thngs they wanted to talk talk me about after the initial consultation, was how we could keep in contact with each other, as they can't use their mobiles to call here. This particular hospital have a lot of people that go there that cross from the North, and they had no problems whatsoever with that.

Yes Stella that is very useful information to have - when a person is ill the last thing they need is any animosity or prejudice as to where they come from - so to find medical staff that treat people well is a great thing.
