Hello,

How can we find out about submissions to the photography contest? Rules and Guidelines? Thanks.

The competition was solely for school children and the schools were contacted with details. The idea being to get them interested while they are young.

However, anyone wanting to offer photographs for display can do so by contacting Kuşkor or bring them into the Cyprus Nature Library between 2 and 4 pm on Thursdays. We can't promise anything as they will be judged alongside other photos donated for our exhibition.

@ msg 1 & 3, Groucho: What an excellent idea! Did ALL schools in TRNC participate?

Hans, all secondary schools were contacted by the Ministry of Education but many felt they could not allot time to the activity as they deemed it clashed with exam preparations. Which is a shame and something we have learned from. For this first Kuşkor competition children of Orta and Lise (secondary) school age groups were invited.

Next year we hope to run another competition giving much more time and expanding the age groups.

@ msg 5, Groucho: Thanks! Maybe next year "Keep TRNC tidy!" could be part of the competition? In my opinion schools are the places to start awareness. I wish "Kuşkor"* good luck and much attention!

Hans, one of the categories for the competition was indeed to identify those hazards like rubbish that threaten wildlife....

Msg. 1: what an excellent idea! I do hope you can persist and that the authorities appreciate the fundamental benefit of this sort of initiative.

I have to confess that I grew up in the Cyprus culture as it was then, where I as a young boy did indeed trap Gold Finches and shot sparrows with my catapult. I also witnessed the practice of liming where Bee Eaters were caught on sticks.

Now, as an adult, an active member of a wildlife preservation society with an active role in natural habitat re-establishment I look back at what may have been the key factor in influencing my behavior towards wildlife in childhood. It seems it was simply down to ignorance - not appreciating what was there and why it was there. This, is what involving schools is all about.

Love your comments 'brother' and that is what it is all about, isn't it - education of the young for the future. And wonderful that you have seen the light and are taking others towards it. We can do with more like you. Much better to educate than to moan. But it takes more than one generation to effect change, doesn't it, and that is why I admire the organisations that are chipping away at the stone of ignorance.

We hope to see you all at Bellapais on one of the days (Sat 19th or Sun 20th Nov). See the events section of Cyprus44 for more details.

For anyone who is interested Kuskor membership is only 25tl a year. This money is used in many initiatives like influencing the Hunting Federation on sustainable hunting practices etc. We are pleased to say they are taking this very seriously and this should improve the chances of endangered species etc.

Don't forget the Cyprus Nature Library provides access to a wealth of books and other materials to enhance your own understanding of Cyprus' natural heritage.

Just so you know we will selling recently re-printed An Illustrated Flora of North Cyprus Volume 1 (D.E.Viney) at the exhibition. If you join Kuşkor you will get a handsome discount too.

This book, regarded by experts as the definitive work on the flora of northern Cyprus has been out of print until Kuşkor arranged for a new print run. From other outlets it would normally cost £39 plus pp but we will have it for £35 for non-members and £30 for members.

Looking forward to the exhibition - if it's anything like last year then I'm sure it will be a huge success!

CNL is open Thursday afternoon 2 - 4:30 and some other days depending on staff available.

We had the pleasure of several trips out with Brian and look forward to his return visit this winter.

We are hoping to have the new (next year's) calendar in time for the exhibition. We have some excellent new pictures.
