I have just posted on another topic and ended with the word "idea!" - it counted 998 characters with 2 left. But when the post appeared all it had was "i" - the "dea!" didn't appear and what if I had used the 2 spare characters? I have been cheated of 6 characters - it isn't fair and I want them back please! And think of the possible consequences - what if I had finished with "So-and-so are wonderful builders - NOT" - the "NOT" would have gone and everybody would buy from the wrong builder.

I was caught out by this a few times, so now I try to leave at least 10 characters 'spare'. If I find that I'm getting too near the limit, I go back and chop out some of the punctuation - or rephrase things to make my post less 'wordy'. At first I thought that it might be due to 'invisible' formatting characters, but I'm not really sure, so I just adopt the above strategy to be on the safe side...

Keith - an excellent strategy - better safe than sorry DD - I wouldn't worry about your personal "shorthand" - your message is very clear

DC. I know the truth should be written. That is why I wrote it, ie you just could not resist having a bite, could you ! Can you now have a pop at someone else, or better still confine your comments to posting your vitriol only on the threads which you initiate. Your stalking and bile contaminates the whole board.

@ msg 9, deputydawg: Jeez! What do you think a Smiley at the end of a line means..?! What a humourless reply you wrote. P.S. If you don't want or like my replies - don't provoke them by using DC this and DC that in your posts. P.P.S. (Without a Smiley). I don't give a d*mn how you write or speak your native tongue - does that make you feel better?

I was feeling fine actually DC. John posted a jovial comment and Keith responded with his usual sound advice which may be helpful to many. When I replied in light hearted vein I had the feeling that you would get on my case as you have done before to me and many others so I have been deliberately winding you up by referring to DC. Your barbed comment is hardly mollified by adding a smiley as most of us have been around long enough to know that the man who smiles at you is not always your friend. Your post revealed your true agenda to abuse those who you think are inadequate and short of your standard of the ultimate greatness in all things. It seems that you don't mind giving it out but dislike it coming back in kind. I will refrain from anticipating things by not mentioning DC again and you can have 2 . As a great man you should be able to work out the total sincerity or otherwise of this gesture and in turn cease being abusive.

Jovial John. Apologies that I was party to your post going off thread . I hope you get the opportunity to wax lyrical with abandon and without restriction as your posts are interesting and funny. If I knew how to ensure you a full quota of spaces I would not hesitate but I think you will have to rely on Keith for technical imput !

Hey DD, I apologise if you think this is none of my business, but I have a free moment and thought I might offer my two bob's worth. Generally I enjoy your posts because of their expression and clarity, but I have to say that I think you got DC's message 7 wrong. I didn't see any bile or vitriol in it, merely a quite gentle and humorous response to your gentle and humorous message 6. I also think he has a fair point in observing that you are being a little provocative in using 'DC' in your posts, which you acknowledged. I have no special barrow to push here, as I'm in no one's corner. I had a game of chess once with Hans and he didn't offer to shake hands at the end, so I don't think he likes me much. But I do think you may have been a little precipitous in jumping down his throat...

Rottolover. Everything posted on this board is your business and I hold my hand up to being about as smooth as a marble in a bucket of puke when it comes to being tactful apart from many other failings. My hackles were up because there is a history of his being short with anyone who mangles the English language. I have great respect for his vast knowledge and expertise in many things but I just wish he would not be so intolerant of those he believes do not attain his high standards. Many have felt extremely hurt but are too polite to defend themselves. In view of posts 11 and 12, I hope that there will be a recognition that the opinions of all members are worthwhile even if not well expressed. That will bring absolute respect. I will try and be couth by not asking who won the Chess Match !

@ msg 16, deputydawg: The second paragraph of Rottolover's post (msg 15) says it all - I really didn't mean to post any rude, malicious or whatever text. Maybe our possibly different sense of humour clashed..? But, I'm always willing to offer an apology when it's due. So, I offer you my apologies for my unintended offense. P.S. Sigh, life would be so much easier if we all corresponded on C44 in our second language...

I had hoped that the exchanges at messages 11 and 12 and that goodwill understanding would end this matter and no apology was due to me nor due from me. The post on 11 Nov regarding the BBC news and the responses are just one illustration of why I took issue. If we can all do our best to be tolerant of each others views even if they are not agreed with or are poorly expressed it will be the better for all of us. As I only normally involve myself in trivia and flippancy here is another test of humour even worse than my jokes. I sincerely hope that I never again feel the urge to try and rebuke Hans and he is entitled to challenge me to a duel at the crack of dawn on April 1st. In the absence of the OK corral Deputydawg will moosey on down to the Lemar carpark on his hoss with his rusty (oops, trusty) six shooter and a water pistol for use by Hans. This to be a one off duel and not best of three as DD will not take him on at Chess nor linguistics. continued

If anyone is mad enough to want to watch such a duel they must buy a ticket with the proceeds going to a local charity. Sue, yes please pray for sunshine but it might be better if it rains as the gritter which is DDs hoss won't travel in the rain and will call off the event.
