On Sunday January 8th we are calling everyone to come and protest against the proposed oil and gas storage tanks that they want to build in the fields of Yedikonuk village. Just 10 km east of Kaplica on the north coast road, they want to allow 36 storage tanks for petrol, diesel, gas and tar...which will virtually spoil the area for anything else like walking, picnicking, bird spotting, snorkeling, swimming, orchid spotting, fishing, cycling, camping and all the other eco-agro-activities of this virtually untouched part of Karpaz.

So bring your own egg sandwiches and lemonade or whatever you like to eat out-of-doors in nature and join us for the " No!-to-the-Petroleum-Storage-Tanks Initiative" (made up of local environmental NGOs and villagers of Yedikonuk, Buyukkonuk, Balalan, Kaplica, Kilitkaya and others from the area)

Just drive up from Kyrenia along the north coast road past Kaplica making sure you don't turn to Buyukkonuk but go straight along the new road towards Balalan.

Just for the record: foreigners are now allowed to actively demonstrate/protest - it's the TRNC law. Your presence (in silent support) may be tolerated by the authorities.

hi,i presume that because of the materials that are shipped in,it makes sense to have storage near the coast somewhere and i also assume that protesters will be walking to get there instead of taking cars and walk over fields instead of using tarmaced roads?? Oh yes and they better turn off all the electric in theyre houses to as the power station using fossil fuels that need storing. I agree that these tanks shouldnt be put in sensitive areas but its our lifestyles/ammenities that makes these tanks needed, best thing would be underground storage or perhaps a disused quarry. Good luck with your protest.

Some 10 plus years ago,in discovering Northern Cyprus,I loved going to the Karpaz, lovely little roads, hedgerows of orchids, wheat fields with purple flowers, like gladioli, birds with bright colours...blue,yellow.

Then they started building the atrocious harbour, completely out of place. It was meant to be for yachts, but looking at the size,I suppose tankers will be arriving to top up the tanks.

If the fuel is for the power station, and that area of Esentepe is ugly, why not put all the uglyness in one place?

When I go to Karpaz now, from the new harbour to Barcadi beach,I look inland and not towards the sea !!

I agree with the protesters,it is the rape of beautiful scenery, and unique not just to the North, but in the whole of Cyprus.

I read that this storage of fuel is not for the benefit of locals, but a commercial venture for resale to other countries!!! Locals just get the inconvenience and no benefit, other than a very few jobs

DC, if you "GOT OUT" more in the "NOW" Cyprus rather than living in the(Historical) past, you would have posted on this worrying subject months ago....Your views on the ideal site for the inevitable" Fuel Dump" would be greatly appreciated,Salamis perhaps...?.

@ msg 11, martinD41: I prefer not to correspond about Northern Cyprus - with people who don't like it here anyway.

Unfortunately there are worse things about to happen in the Med re oil and gas. Storage of hydro carbons on land unfortunately are not best done underground as there is far to many problems that cannot be controlled if this method is chosen. Does anyone know who the operator is likely to be?

Thanks for your comments. I realize some don't know that it will be a free-port basis with open sea trading going on. There will be extremely little economic benefit to locals and all bad news for the environment.

The Environmental Report for Lefke and Famagusta was negative, so why is it suddenly okay in Karpaz, especially when the same government made Buyukkonuk a Pilot Ecovillage and there has been about 3 million dollars worth of investment in the area already for eco-tourism infrastructure, the majority from the Turkish Embassy. Tourists, both international and local, come to the area to enjoy the fresh air and scenery, for leisure activities, village life, food and culture.

Many people besides foreign residents read this site. There are different ways to help protest. You might even alert your media 'back home' to raise awareness internationally. And if you are a citizen you have every right to protest here.

by the way, it went well on Sunday despite the bad weather.

We just get the mess and I am sure very little financial reward for locals!!!!!!!!!

I for one will try to get foreign media interested!!!

Here is one already, in German!!

Do we need this when it is not even for NC's benefit? There must be better, safer ways to improve the local economy?
