We have always stayed in Southern Cyprus but are considering going to Northern Cyprus for our holiday this year.

It sounds in the main just "up our street" but I am becoming more and more concerned reading about the litter on the beaches etc.

How bad is it?

The last time I was there, it was pretty awful! but have not been for a few years now, so maybe they have cleaned up! I know the South is still looking spick & span

The public beach cleanliness varies from poor - disgusting. The TRNC/Turkish community do not share the EU accepted norms of beach/water standards, and this is hailed as a tourist eden! That said, the locals are, generally, very hospitable, friendly and accommodating.

The South is not spick and span and to be honest I tend to find most Mediterranean countries have litter issues as fly tipping too wide spread.

I like South Cyprus but have chosen the North as where I have bought and want to retire as more picturesque and you have your own space.

All in all have found the residents in Cyprus very hospitable and the Greeks not upset with me for buying in the North and only hope at some point in the future they sort their differences.

I see all the negative posts but we all have to look at the issues at other Countries, I had a lucky escape in Spain and we are all have to tread carefully.

Are you really going to let a litter problem be the deciding factor ?

Take train ride in Egypt, have a long look out of the windows, then come back and comment on litter.

It's all comparitive.

Most beaches have bits of litter about, but in the main nothing you wouldn't see in most other countries.

berniebear444 - yrret is absolutely right. It's not the most litter-free place I've ever been but on the other hand it's not as if you're not wading waist-deep in rubbish either.

I see you've asked, on another thread, about taxi fare from The Hideaway into Kyrenia. Not sure how much this would cost but can say The Hideaway is a lovely place

Berniebear,I have lived here 3 years now, previously 10 years on holidays. The place is so much better now.And beaches like Escape beach and Karsiaka, where there is a small charge for sunbeds are kept very clean.

Recently a restaurant in Girne harbour, was closed down for touting for business !!!

I did have a few holidays in the South,I so much prefer the tranquility of the North.

And thanks,Stroud is an answer to a crossword in Cyprus Today newspaper.

Sorry - my message 7 should have read "It's not as if you're wading, etc. etc."

Most litter problem is associated with piles of builders rubbish and is more road-side, field, country lane dumped. A blot on the landscape. However there are some really nice beaches which are maintained to an excellent standard which are in the most beautiful surroundings. The problem is that you have to pay to gain entrance and it can be expensive.

I was reading trip adviser recently and noted that tourists frequently commented on the litter problem. Perhaps the Tourist Minister who is doing everything possible to promote tourism should take note? This has been an ongoing problem for many years now.

It's really not that bad. Alagadi (turtle beach) gets some rubbish washed up during the winter, but groups clear it in the spring and it is very nice. We went for a walk in October across all 3 bays and it was very clean. The opening thread was someone looking to come on holiday - Acapulco, Lara, Escape and kervensay are all spotless during the tourist season - as is alagadi. Too many people on this board are just sooooo negative about everything and it is simply not true. It really is similar to other areas of the mediterranean - go to Italy, Spain, Greece, Malta and you will se the same (just more crowded)

Having visited TRNC regularly during the last 4 years, I would say the litter problem is not as bad as it used to be.

Believe me compared to the North the South is "Spick & Span" try travelling from Paphos to Kyrenia! and let your eye's see the difference when you cross the border

Have a good time at the Hideaway!

Did I say the south was "all and sundrie"? think I just said the south was a lot cleaner in litter although thinking about it, certainly the beaches and hotels have a lot more to offer than the north! and then we come down to the caravan owners :-( (without deeds) ...............small minds and all that! he who has the last laugh is the yoker

We visit very often, fly to larnaca. Stop trying to make out all is so terrible. If you don't like visiting, don't come.

Simples.

The litter issue here does not involve which side is best it is just untidy and unattractive from a littering point of view.

Been visiting TRNC for over 30 years mainly because of the sand, sea and sun. Honestly can say that I have had no issues with dirty beaches. Usually go to Glapsedes and Koca Rais between Famagusta and Bogaz. Amazing clear waters, amazing soft sand, amazing uncrowded beaches, beautiful scenic drive on now amazing new roads. Everybody is friendly, polite and happy most of the time.

Enjoy your holiday, berniebear444 ! You'll not regret the decision!
