Just visited north Cyprus for the first time and was sadly disappointed The beaches were covered in rubbish The forests full of even more rubbish The tourist attractions not much better The housing developments are uncontrolled and poor quality if they are even finished Really sad,,, because it's naturally very beautiful Came over to look at houses with a view to buying and just felt so sad at the destruction and over development.in inappropriate places.

Well said and a true but sad reflection of the rubbish problem. Also sad to say the last time I was in the UK it reminded me of the TRNC.....a rubbish tip. I think it may take years to educate the locals not to tip rubbish.

mac512 Unfortunately what you have witnessed is sadly true and has been commented on many, many times. How many visitors experience the same and never return? I see you live in Kiev. Is the awful legal & corruption problems around buying property in the TRNC not well known in the Ukraine? There are all too many sad examples highlighted on this forum. Will you visit the TRNC again?

No different in UK. I travelled on the London tube yesterday evening and watched well dressed business men leave there food cartons and rubbish all over the train. I presume they don't do this at home so why in public places?

Well said Msg 8, Dutch. Across the street from me in an empty field, there was so much rubbish left over from the developers and their workers. I explained to the Catalkoy Mukhtar that my boys and I wanted to clean the area and he provided and delivered the bin for us to do so. I really love Catalkoy and want to help keep it beautiful. There is also a real sense of community in our village. Regardless of our nationalities, each of our home countries had the same problem. In the 70's in America, there was a commercial with a native American crying because of the litter. We had the owl "Give a hoot, don't pollute" campaign as well. It takes a generation to effect real change. By the way, last week an EXPAT bought a desk from my neighbors. She went to the car to put down her back seat and I watched her as she took "rubbish" out of her car and threw it straight on the ground. She was parked adjacent to the big bin. Tsk Tsk.

well said molly-people power is the answer-maybe if all the ex pats could get together and clean up their local area,It may shame the locals into being a little less blaise about chucking their crap everywhere. imagine if.in the UK that immigrants went round cleaning the brits mess up-Im sure it would have an immidiate and positive effect

Both North and South cyprus were both beautiful and unspoilt once but as with all tourist attractions they have been gradually spoilt with over development and a gradual increase of the 18/30 mindset and the negative influence of some Brit expats ( not all ) During the last 10 years TRNC has become less and less enjoyable as a holiday destination and it's not just because of a bit of litter !!!

To have the last word ( if possible) For me I escaped without making a stupid decision and investing money in North Cyprus and I had a good holiday.( within the hotel compound) The rubbish, well if the Turks want to live like that no problem enjoy ,,,perversion comes in every shape and form. For all expats living out there all the best hope you get it sorted ,,It's a beautiful place, ( but screwed up 100%) at the moment

msg 18 I hope we can educate the British also. My dog came back last week and every day we discover new walks, beautiful country around me. We live in Wales on the side of a mountain, We have discovered lovely walks but the rubbish, mainly beer and cider cans, it is no different than i saw in cyprus. I'm horrified as the council will pick up most things and we have so many tips that things are recycled.

If you think the land is polluted with rubbish...the sea is 100 times worse. The clean ups will happen but to no avail sadly.

The rubbish problem is I am afraid nothing new. Having lived and worked on the island during the 70,s, 80,s and 90,s plus to many holidays than we can remember rubbIsh has always been a problem both north and south. Any picnic or beach BBQ area has always been left looking like a tip. But I can say that the UK is just as bad. A trip along any motorway will show mountains of rubbish along the carriageways.......probably no clearing being done due to budget cuts. As far as the TRNC is concerned whilst the rubbish is unsightly we still love the place!

message 20 Lilli I am glad you got your doggy back with you. I must have missed that one and you sre enjoying walking him in Wales I wish you well Message 22 we cant see the rubbish dumped on the road side here anymore as we have the streets lights off ! so if they cant afford to keep the lights on they are not goign to pay litter pickers in the UK maybe benefit freeloaders should be out doing it ! ..... But message 1 you are right the litter is a problem in the TRNC far more so than anywhere I have been but it costs money to clear and the ethos is if there is litter others just do the same so an example is never set. (personally I cant bear litter droppers) and if I had seen a woman emptying her car of rubbish I would have had a word with her ! It is darn shame that the natives and expats and visitors that do drop litter dont see the beauty they are ruining.
