Newlad. I think they fly into Akrotiri then move onto Bloodhound Camp near Paramali - a few kms west of Episkopi. Ask your friend where he is staying whilst in Cyprus - he will know from their briefing. Enjoy the drink with him.

I had a Canadian friend coming back from ops via Bloodhound camp and he said they were not allowed out during their brief stay here. Hopefully it will be different for your mate.

There is a base there, but is not used for Afghanistan-UK transitees. Newlad, Paralami is approx 15 mins max, (observing the RoC speed limits) west of Limmasol and clearly marked on your left. Bloodhound Camp (BHC) can be seen on top of the hill (mesa) on your LHS after leaving the motorway. Drive through the village of Paramali and watch for the turning on your LHS for the beach and BHC. I forget if it is marked as such and the road is small/narrow. Nice restaurant on the beach.

We were allowed on to Bulldog Camp to see our son on his R&R in Cyprus after his first Afghan tour of duty. They landed at Akrotiri and then went to the camp outside Episkopi. We had a special pass and we were given the officers mess for a three hour reunion. On his return from his second Afghan tour we were allowed on to Tunnel Beach outside Episkopi to meet up with him there. Enjoy your get together

The British army are allowed out in Cyprus now, they were stopped from certain areas for a while because of the rape and murder of a tour rep by 4 soldiers.

Newlad, it will be up to your friend to apply for permission to his C.O. for you to meet up on camp. All of the returning troops have organised activities either on the camp or, in the summer, on Tunnel Beach. They were not allowed off camp, apart from doing activities on the beach, at the end of the visit we were escorted off camp and the gates securely locked by the guards. It was wonderful for us to see our son safe and sound and on his way back to base in the UK.

Akrotiri is not on the limassol - Paphos road, Follow the sign into Limassol city centre and along the beach road go right to the end until you reach the old harbour small round about, you will see the harbour on your left, then follow the sign for Episkobi and that will take you both to Akrotiri and the bitish base and the main SPS HQ. if you follow the Paphos route you will have to drive 40km back on yourself via kandu. much easier from Limassol city centre. (My birth home town Episkobi)

Hi again newlad. If you do not know the area, some of the posts previously could confuse you with directions. Once you have established where he will be accommodated/available to meet, email me and I'll forward directions. Having served in the SBAs, and visited friends recently, I have a fairly good knowledge of how to get around/to the various sites within the WSBA. When is his arrival date and where will you travel from in the TRNC?

There are areas in the RoC classified as 'Out of Bounds (OoB)' to British military personnel and their families, whatever their status in Cyprus may be. If caught in these areas, there are serious punishment implications. Arrivals from Afghanistan will be briefed as to where/when/how they can be 'allowed out', if at all. Should an individual/group elect to visit an OoB area, they know full well the decision will cost - dearly so too! I doubt newlad will take his friend to these areas.

Geoff, on the Sky News this morning there was a case of a priest in the UK being given 20 years in jail for "Fiddling" with boys for 18 years! And they still allow priests to roam the streets??????!!!!!!!!!!! Get real. Have a wider view of life - not everyone is the same that is why there is a jail system for those who can not seem to understand the rights and wrongs of life. For the rest there is freedom and the right to be treated equal.

On our son's return from his two tours of duty in Afghanistan they were not allowed off camp, apart from the organised activities that they were coached to and from. They were also limited to a certain number of beers on camp and they knew the consequences of getting blotto. None of the lads wanted to lose the privileges they were due on their return to the UK. Ronjeremy the kidnap, rape and brutal murder of Louise Jenson, the Danish tour guide, was a terrible act of mindless, drunken violence. Ironically our son is engaged to a beautiful Danish girl from the Jenson family.
