My dear neighbours have now got a wireless internet connection with Sunny Cyprus, and were all set to watch BBC etc, but it's not available in this country. Now i know other internet providers give you a VPN included in the package, but do Sunny Cyprus? Do you have to ask for one, or is there a hidden icon that has to be activated?

Try downloading ex pat shield- its a free program that makes the BBC think you are in the UK.

It does work but does have pop up ads on it-that's how its free I suppose.

I think you can pay for a premium version that has no pop ups on it.

Otherwise-try switching to multimax that have vpn built in.

Hope this helps.

Hmm,

As far as I know, not only sunnycyprus does not offer a free VPN service, they also use IP addresses which are assigned to them by Turkish Telekom (instead of paying for membership and getting their own). This means that any website blocked in Turkey by courts(there are hundreds) are automatically blocked for sunnycyprus customers as well.

If the prices and other on their website is correct, their 'Platinum' package (2Mbps) is the minimum speed you would need for any decent tv streaming, which costs 65gbp per month which is a whooping more than 180TL/month. Combined with 110TL Installation fee AND 140TL equipment 'deposit', no direct IP access and only 12hours of customer support/day, this dear neighbors must be very rich and do not care about money or the service they are getting for the money they are paying.

You can get a 2Mbps Multimax package (which is our most basic package), for only 60TL/month with only 50TL activation and no deposits, comes with IP addresses from Europe, has a built in VPN connection so you can watch BBC with no configuration, and extended customer support hours.

Normally people say you get what you pay for, in your neighbors case, I have to say, you pay, pay, pay some more and get...umm...something, and then you discover you need to pay more to get a vpn connection. Good luck.

Please let me say here, that my neighbours are fairly new to internet connections and what is available, and are no way foolish or rich by any means...however they are also not privvy to what goes on in the internet world and have perhaps been slightly duped by Sunny Cyprus...as are a fair amount of other people...(seeing as they are still in business)

So instead of patronising them you could you perhaps offer some helpful advice...

As an aside, i am pretty pissed off at your reply, i do not think that was appropriate...perhaps being so popular has gone to your head a little bit?!

DD, please be assured that my own frustration and pissed offnessness was aimed maybe 10% to your neighbors and 90% to the companies who are using other peoples' lack of knowledge on the subject(as you have pointed it out and) and leech off of their back.

We believe that by raising the bar, we are setting an example to other companies to follow, hoping to eventually lead to a health competition.

You should understand that our efforts to bring fast, reliable and cheap Internet to this island would not have much value if people keep on spending multiple magnitudes of money to an inferior service in every way. I dont understand how some of these 'competitors' are able to sleep at night, or are we the fools?

Maybe I was not able to express my feelings appropriately, and it my frustration was mistaken for rudeness, I apologize.

I only hope that your neighbor did not make a yearly commitment or ask for money back. I am willing to help anyway I can. Can always email me. K.

Read any of Kemal's posts and I think you will see very little patronising (IMHO), no attempt at rudeness and a genuine desire to help, even those that are not Multimax customers.

I do not attempt to answer for him, he has done that himself and apologised for his frustration. Perhaps acceptance of the apology is the way forward and your help in getting them away from their current contract if possible, which would seem not to be be cheap or meeting their needs.

No offence intended either.

Kemal.

I did rather feel that your reply was quite patronising, however, i do accept your apology, and as soon as i have a bit more money, i shall also be using MultiMax.

Now, back to my neighbours. Unfortunately, they are quite elderly and rather set in their ways, and yes, they have signed on for a whole year. So for this year they will be needing to hide their IP address themselves. Are there any particular sites you recommend? A friend told me ''hide my ass'' is a good one. what do you think?

Why not giving Sunnycyprus a call and ask all these kind of questions?

We are with them more than 10 years and they do answer all our questions.

The de-facto free solution of vpn is expat shield. http://www.expatshield.com/ . It comes with ads to support free service.

Alternative would be to pay a small premium (usually around 5gbp/month) for a third party vpn service.

Also, as VPN adds overhead into a connection (meaning your connection will be slower with a VPN connection), it is also worth knowing what package they have purchased from SS.

If they have purchased anything less than SSs 'Platinum Package' (2Mbps), I think all these attempts to watch TV would be futile as the overall bandwidth will not be enough for TV streaming.
