Baglikoy is a designated Eco village in Lefke district nestling in the foothills of the Troodos mountains perched above Morphou Bay. On a list of best kept secrets it must run joint with 'where is 6M's?'

This will be the first EcoDay to be staged and hosted by the people of the village and well worth a visit at this time of the year if for just for the scenery alone.

10.00 Meet and Greet Turkish/English. Shepherds Pipe concert and Photographic exhibition.

11.00 Conducted 2 hour walk by guides through fields of wild flowers and orchids to the Bat Cave.

Later in the day a childrens Violin concert and painting competition. A demonstration of Hellim cheese and Citir Pitir making by the ladies of the village. Local produce on sale throughout the day.

1800 Good byes.

Directions to the village.

The unspoilt village of Baglikoy is situated in Lefke District in the foothills of the the Troodos mountains and can be found travelling west from Guzelyurt towards Gemikonagi. Pass through Gemikonagi keeping the sea to your right hand side and after about one mile you will find the road leading up to Baglikoy on your left hand side. Ascend the road leading up through the foothills for about three miles to the village where you will be greeted by the event organisers.

Journey time from Guzelyurt about 20 minutes, look out for the speed cameras in Gaziveren and Yesilyurt.

Slatnumber7 I have heard of 3M's and MM's but 6M's well i never!

More importanly I do know where the Beautiful village of Baglikoy is. You promised me you would never tell all and here your are divulging our best kept secrete to everyone.

It sounds like a must for all people who love whats traditional in this island, which is undergoing so much change. This village, is Cyprus as it used be in the past, un developed, beautiful scenery, fresh air and mountain breeze in the summer. What more could I say.

Let me start by saying I will definately be there on Sunday!

Secondly if anyone who visits Baglikoy on Sunday, likes the village and would like to move there, then I may be able to help, as there are two traditional Cypriot houses available for long term rent.

Go and take a look and if you would like to view the properies on Sunday 25th March 2012 you can give me a call before hand on 0533 8630425 or on the day to view. If you would like to see photos of the houses let me know.

Ooops attention to detail thank you Groucho, it's an age thing, too early to be beer thing!

As rejela says I did declare I would keep mum about the village but some of the people in the village have asked me to get the word across to the British people here in Cyprus to promote it. It would have been churlish of me to refuse to help them although I must confess it did cross my mind.

And no one's asked about the Bat Cave.

I've just been told that for those who may find the walk to the Bat Cave a challenge some of the young men in the village will provide them with lift on their ATV's.

Love is in the air and maybe of interest to Twitchers a pair of Great Spotted Cuckoos have returned to the village again this year and are engaged in forming a very noisey and amorous relationship.

They will without doubt find a gullible pair of magpies to act as foster parents, not the same pair as last year I hope. The two cuckoo chicks ran the 'parents' ragged last year chasing them from fig tree to fig tree squawking for more and more food.

Blow, blow, blow. I am going to miss what promises to be a fab day in a fab place. A fab place that is a secret no more!

so how can I split myself into two and be part of what promises to be a fab event. As a friend of minde would say 'Suggestions on the back of a postage stamp.#

Oolps, was in Cyprus Today - sorry I did not see it, but i would have LOVED to have given it a mention in Cyprus Star. Please let me know in future so I can tell others too. And of course, be able to come.

Unfortunatley my bookings were made before last Saturday anyway, so i am a double loser.

Hope it goes really well.

I believe the event organisers have prepared something for the press, I'll speak to them about it and maybe sort out some photographs of the day too!

That's not an easy one to answer Msg 16. Me and the President Dr. Derviş Eroğlu, rejela and his bunch, lots of people from the village no doubt a few more government officials and the village Morris Dancing Team. So may be 100 or so perhaps more.

It was a cracking day out, I'm sure the guestimate on the amount of people who attended is about right. The ladies in the village and the event organisers did a really good job, very professional and lots of nice food to try and buy.

I'm sure there'll be another EcoDay in the future dizzycows but time is a bit limited if you want to see the wild flowers and orchids.(E mail me, I can point you in the right direction and offer you both a cup of tea when you've had a looksee, that is if you want to visit to see the flowers at this time of year.)

The good thing that was obviously a plan made in advance, the one feeder road in the middle of the village was designated for the stalls and blocked off, so all visitors one had to park up and walk around and not take a 'rapid tour by car' through our narrow village roads.

PS I did fib about the Morris Men!

They were booked elsewhere!!

Hey Groucho. Didn't anyone tell you I hate the cold! so I hope your pestimation (as in pessimistic and estimation) is wrong. Might take Slatnumber 7 up on the offer, when I get a moment before the flowers fade into the heat of summer. Might the morris Men be there then????

The event was super! The turn out was excellent. As Tony Hutchinson said the parking went about half way down to the sea from the village, which is quite a distance. As we left the village more and more vehicles turned up. The walk to Bats Cave was such an informative one with Tony pointing out about seven different species of orchids, together with other beautiful plants. The sceneray is amazing, we saw Egyptian fruit bats roosting upsidedown in the cave through night sight binoculars. Sadly the village has emptied out over the last 100 years, from when it was a thriving grape growing (hence its name BAG, which means vine grapes) village, where they used to produce their own wines etc. The population was about 2000 at its peak. Hopefully the village will now be restred to its former glory, Insallah!

Now we are waiting for the next Eco day! Well done to everyone involve, a Great achievement.

According to the 1960 Census the population was about 550. From the local people I've spoken to the population took a serious plunge over the late 60's leading up to '74 with many families abandoning their homes on the outskirts of the village and moving into enclaves elsewhere or to the former Commonwealth Countries.

I don't think the population at present is as high as 200 Marion, I'd be inclined to suggest about 120 people all told. However, the general trend is optimistic for the future, families are returning to the area.
