Does staying in the South for 1 night allow you the full 90 days again, or do you have to leave cyprus altogether.

Dee - if you go over to the south, you get a 90 day visa on your return - even if you go shopping for 1 hour. Nick

Dee In theory you should leave the Island completely, having said that I know people that have gotten away with going to the South for a day to get their 90 day visa's. I also know of one couple that were deported because they thought that going to the South was legal way of doing it (there were other mitigating factors as well that led to the deportation). In a nutshell If it was me I would not take the risk. Take a trip to mainland Turkey either by ferry (not recommended this time of year!) or get a cheap flight. AJ

Thanks NN and AJ, it is just for kev, I went to UK a week ago and got my 90 days, kev is going to UK in Feb so hoped 1 night in the south would suffice just this once, I think he will risk it. Whats the worst that can happen, a fine...

Yep it will be a fine and quite a large one as well (depending on how many days you are deemed to be outside of your visa). As far as I am aware the fine would be payable on exit from the TRNC. AJ

People seem to make extraordinary efforts to avoid getting residency (which is relatively painless). I always wonder why?

What about if you want to go south, you`ve applied for your renewal over three weeks ago, but because of Bayram etc. they still do not have your renewal ready in Nicosia. Mine expired officially on 22nd December but I applied for it 2nd December and I still do not have it. Can I cross the border?

You have got to get a letter from the Police stating your renewal is going through but when I got my letter they insisted on knowing what date you were going to the south and so the form was only valid for that day.

whistler last year we reapplied for our yearly residency and crossed to the south without it being in the passports. we had no problems. but remember things change here and nobody tells you. yes if you over stay the fine is payable on exit , unless you have no intentions of ever coming back because if you do it will be doubled.

My husband and I crossed to the south today even though his work permit and my residency permit are in the process of being renewed. Nothing noted in our passports though. A bit of fuss was made at the crossing but we were allowed over and no probs whatsoever coming back.

Whistler, It depends on who is checking your passport. Officially, you get 1 week's grace after the residency expires. In September, I managed to go back and forth quite a few times after the week's grace had expired but my brother was stopped on the way to pick up his wife from the airport at Bayram. They were not interested in any excuses and told him to go to the Police Station - not much point going during Bayram though! I had to go and pick her up.

Sorry Dee, but you dont have a choice over residency. If they choose to go by the letter of the law "if you spend more than 90 days a year in the TRNC, you should apply for Temporary Residence"

The TRNC economy is collapsing and (some) ex-pats are trying to back out of paying a few quid to the government for legal residency? I wouldn't risk a huge fine and possible deportation for the sake of a few quid!!

I am not here all the time and I do not want residency, I am not avoiding or evading paying to stay here, I would happily pay but I do not wish to apply for residency, jesus christ give it a rest.

The point many are forgetting is 90 days is A MAXIMUM that can be granted. If the immigration officer thinks that you are "playing the system for your own benefit" , he is entitled to give as little as 24 HOURS, or any number UPTO 90.
