hi jacko

firstly concerning your driving licence, you dont have to change your address but i would say is if you have not changed to the plastic card licence do this before you come out they say you can use your gb licence for a year then you have to have it translated into turkish and approved at the notary office but i have driven on my gb licence for a very long time without it being translated into turkish and i have not been questioned

secondly concerning your passport i would advise you to renew your passport in england becasue by the middle of the year all old passports have to be changed to the new passport with the id chip on the back of the page so instead of going thru the greif of changing it abroad just do it in the u.k, because as far as i know you would have to go over to the south to renew where the british consulate is

regards

ukturk

p.s i dread it when i see your name!!! i think to myself what does she want now!!! LOL LOL

only joking love i know one thing thou by the end of this you are going to owe me a slap up meal!!! lol

I don't understand - Keith has an old passport without the chip which still has three years to go - are you saying this is retrospective regarding old passports and he will have to have a new one by the midle of next year?

I don't think you have to change you passport to a chipped one this year or anytime soon, as far as I know and I travel quite a bit with work and no-one in my Company has told me that.

I post this from the IPS website.

Do I need to exchange my current passport?

Your current passport will remain valid until its expiry date. You will not need to exchange your passport to a biometric passport, but should apply for a new passport in good time as and when your current passport expires. It is best to allow three weeks for a passport application.

Do I need to change my current passport for a biometric passport to travel to the US?

Most UK citizens will not need to exchange their current digital passport for a biometric book. Please note the following:

Children must have their own individual passports to be eligible for entry to the US under the VWP

Your British passport will qualify for the US Visa Waiver Programme (US VWP) if the personal information page (the page containing your photo, your name and your date of birth) is on an inside page of the passport rather than on the inside back cover.

If your personal information page is on the inside back cover and was issued inside the UK, your passport will qualify for US VWP.

If your personal information page is on the inside back cover and was issued outside the UK, please visit (please note these links will open in a new browser window) http://www.usembassy.org.uk, http://www.dhs.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/vwp_travelerguide.pdf or http://www.fco.gov.uk for more detailed information about US visa and immigration rules

Passport. No problem. You renew it at the high commission in Nicosia. Not sure of the process, but I undersand it is painless.

Driving Licence. You need to have a UK address on your licence for it to be valid. The address must be one where you are contactable. You don't actually have to live there. (Think of the millions of expats working overseas on a long term basis, but who will eventually be moving back.) It is an offence to simply move house and not tell them. If they can't contact you, they could cancel your licence. Remember that if your licence is cancelled, there is no exchange agreement with the TRNC or Turkey. You could drive on a TRNC licence for 12 months, but after that time you would have to take a UK driving test, and after driving here you would certainly fail. There is, however, no need to notify the DVLA of any overseas address.

hi guys

sorry i did not explain fully, you dont have change your current passport to the chip passport, you can actually wait for you current passport to run out then apply for a new one thats when you will get the newer style of passport, but if you are going to live out in cyprus it will be pretty hard to renew your passport, so thats why i said you are better off just applying for a new one now even thou you got 5 yeras left, then you dont have to go thru the stress and hassle of going thru the procedure

and like i said with your licence when living in turkey and north cyprus (same rules) you are allowed to drive on your gb licence upto a year then you have to have it translated and approved by the notary office and if you got a licence already you dont have to notify them, but like i said make sure if you got the older style of licence get it changed to the new one

regards

ukturk

Just a quick thought. There is an urban myth that TRNC licences are not recognised by the UK authorities. That is not the case.

Morning all, question for ukturk.

You mention changing from the old style driving license to the new plastic card one - what reason is there for this??

I've not lived in the UK for the past 11 years so still have an old one and don't have any plans to go back there before I come to Cyprus. My visits to the UK have been few and far between so I'd never thought about the license. Will I encounter problems if I don't have the new plastic license??

Thanks

hi rtgirl

morning is not the word more like good night lol

what is is the early bird catches the worm or something!!!! lol

im in the same boat i havent lived in the u.k for 8 years and only go and visit maybe once a year for hols but i still changed it when i was there a couple of years ago

the reason i say change the licence becasue eventually the older paper licence will be phased out because the whole of europe use the plastic card system and it also acts as id because it has your picture of you on it

as far as i know you wont encounter any problems but you never know but it is better to be safe than sorry, dont panic but next time you are in the u.k have it changed wont take long just send it to the dvla and it will take around 7 to 10 days for it to come thru mine took 9 days

hope this helps

The old-style paper licences are still perfectly valid in the UK. You can change to the the new plastic ones for free. If for any reason you need to replace your licence, it will be the new one that you get.

Hello again

ukturk and ianwfs, thanks for your replies, most helpful - as usual! Keep up the good work lol....

The reason for the far too early post was that I was at work, 7.00am Saudi Arabia time, 4.00am GMT.... The day I get a job that doesn't start in the early hours I will be very happy.

That said, this is now my weekend....
