I know friends who stayed at Dome,Rocks and British. All had a great time and they are right in the centre of Girne. So no taxi or bus fares needed if u want to stay around town. Malpas is in Chatakoy and have met people who stayed there and said they would never stay again. But everyone is different and some people like it at the malpas. If you stay in town but want to go to other areas the bus stops are opposite the main car park. There are also bus booking offices near there that go to Gazimagosa and Guzelyurt.

John have you had quotes from any of the other hotels to stay there for your whole stay? I would have thought that the Dome would be cheaper than Rocks with the British cheaper still.

I am visiting to enjoy north, look for a rental villa or apartment, enjoy the food and hopefully meet some people whilst i am there. I am single, 56 and do drive. Haven't asked the other hotels for full stay quotes.... yet.

Have you had a look at the various travel sites like tripadvisor.com? Only caveat is that there have been allegations that hotels (worldwide) do their own glowing write ups.

if you want to see the sights it would be better for you to hire a car, as everything here is quite far apart. you may get a bit fed up with just going into girne night after night. there are loads of places to eat ect, but you would see much more of the real cyprus if you hire a car. i don't know what your budget is whilst you are here is,? but in general the more stars a hotel has the more drinks ect cost. in some they charge london west end prices, so something to keep in mind. we have lived here for quite a while now, it would be best to look at trip advisor or holiday truth and see what people who have stayed recently have thought. good luck what ever you decide and have a good holiday.

I have stayed at the Dome and do not rate it. I have been inside the Pia Bella and it looked ok but I cannot vouch for the rooms. The Mecure looks great. There are some good ones around you just need to do some more research. Personally, I would rather rent an apartment in Kyrenia for the stay.

As you are coming on your own and wish to meet people, I would stay at both the Malpas (as we are a lovely hotel) and also then at one of the hotels in the centre of town, as then you would get the best of both worlds. Whilst with us you would definitely need a car and you could explore the island and view properties during the day and come back to the peace and quiet in the evenings and enjoy our fantastic facilities. Whilst staying in the town centre, you could explore Girne and all its cafes, bars and restaurants (and noise) without the need for a car. You could also drink without the worry of having to drive back to the hotel. Both options would suit the single traveller!

Hector Msg 7 - trip advisor can also be rather out of date, I have seen last postings at least 18 months old also things can change in a hotel in weeks (with new management). I also think that few good reviews get onto it from the public as often they can't be bothered (we know how many people say they will say something nice but never do). I agree that many companies will also try to blow their own horn (you can usualy tell by the nature of the review).

I stay at the Pia Bella everyone made most welcome and you are very well looked after, any problems they are soon sorted. There are standard rooms and superoir rooms not much difference in the rooms excpet the standard rooms are facing the road. 2 lovely pools and nice gardens, great breakfast lots to choose from. You can negotiate a price for their own car hire cheaper the more days you hire it, leave the keys at the desk while having breakfast get it back cleaned. Can't say anything negative about it.

Sue and Claire, thank you for your input. not too many apartments in the harbour area for let for 4 weeks... or do you know of any? yes, i believe the malpas is nice for relaxing in the evenings if you've had a busy day. the suggestion of maybe staying in one of the hotels in the harbour area for one week to get a taste of what's there is a good idea.

I've stayed at the Malpas and I really wouldn't recommend it... i'm not sure where they picked up their 5 stars from, it must have been buy one, get one free for that day because the service was nothing more than shoddy! The food is average, bordering poor. As previous reviewers have mentioined the location isn't great either. Apart from the nice views (if you get a seaview), I really wish I could say anything nice about this place and looking through other hotel review websites, most would agree. If I had to choose then I would suggest the Rocks hotel in the centre of Kyrenia, nice modern hotel, service is as good as it can get in NC and worth spending the extra. Ok, it doesn't have it's own beach but does have a nice pool and plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Enjoy your stay.

I recently stayed in the smaller White Pearl Hotel right on Kyrenia Harbour and in front of the British Hotel. Couldn't fault it - as long as you don't mind the noise of the bustle down in the Harbour in the evenings. I don't mind noise. Fantastic view of the whole harbour from the small verandah if you have a harbour facing room.

Hey, John - no need to be single in Cyprus! Find out what delights (some) nightclubs hold - just ask any (on the take) taxi driver! Don't go near an estate agent or advocate, no matter how tempted!
