Just returned from a walk through the village and walked passed a very distressing sight. A metal cage/kennel with a boxer type male chained up as skinny as anything just standing in its own faeces facing the wall and shaking. In the cage are also 2 small puppies who are clearly distressed and are continually yapping. Can anything be done? Anyone walking along that part of the village must have heard and seen these poor animals. is this something KAR might be able to assist with?

I don't think that KAR can do anything if the dogs are on private land. Could you speak to the Muhter perhaps? What a dreadful situation :(

Is the owner there and if so, who are they, I wonder. It might be an idea to speak to KAR to ascertain what you might be able to do, or speak to the Muhtar. A very sad situation indeed,

Yes they are in someones front yard by their gate which is near their front door. As you go through the village and walk passed the mosque take a left by the crossroads (opposite Liaisons, same side as shop on the corner shop). The house is just a short walk up on the righthand on a corner (I think opposite a house called the orangerie).

I guess they do the so called "business" stealing and then salling the dogs. A month ago I lost my dog in Ozankoy and we needed policy's help to find it before they could sell it again. Be carefull!

Hi Judy, There is a department that deals with animal cruelty. I think based in leftkosia. I do not have the number but Im sure KAR should have it. Very distressing.

Yes, I agree with Lilli and perhaps to go to the authorities is the best way to handle this. As an individual you would be 'interfering' if you approached the owner, and it could well be that you might encounter a language difficulty (although tones of voic e often say more than words!). As to message 8 - if this is true then it should be exposed. Do you have any proof of this?

A few years ago something similar was happening in Girne. I know that Kar were phoned and they did come to visit and spoke to the owners. A few weeks later, the owners got rid of the dog (sadly, only to replace it with a puppy labrador). Please phone Kar and maybe they can help.

Woodspeckie, with regard to the fox, do you mean the one in Baris Park? The one that has been shut in a tiny cage, on it's own for over a year? Not really a good example for the council to set for local residents.

Lauvaine. Yes that is the wild fox, when I was there in December it really upset me to see it so distressed pacing up and down in the cage, there were some workers doing a new path I mentioned it to them but they didn't seem to care. I did ask someone to speak to Kuskor about it but didn't hear anything back.

Have you actually asked the owners about it ?

Are they permently locked in a metal travel cage ? That's awful I would help them :(

Are you confident enough to enquire with the owner about them ?

I've just visited the dogs named , it was quite a sad sight however not as bad as I thought the dog in with puppies is very old and I would think this rather than lack of food is why so thin as other 3 adult dogs are of god healthy weight , yes cage needs clean and when I fed them they gobbled it up !! Just hope they are not being used to breed puppies for sale .

Here in the U.K a Turkish man moved into a flat behind us and bought an 18 month old dog with him It was a dog the size of a great dane. He chained him and left him in a concrete section behind a shop premises. Over the last four weeks he has never spoken to the dog, never taken him for a walk and progressively starved him. Also left him out when the temperature dropped below freezing. We have not slept properly for the last month as we have been in so much anguish over the dogs suffering, he has howled and cried pathetically all day and all night. It has been as much torture to us as it must have been for the poor animal. Why do Turkish people have a dog if they don't want to care for them, and why do they seem not to have an ounce of compassion either? Could somebodyTurkish give me some sort of explanation.

Gemini39, if you're in the UK why have you not called the RSPCA, they can take action on these sort of cases and will investigate?

we have rung the RSPCA and dog warden but as the dog has shelter and food (even though it may be little) they can do nothing about the situation

Must admit I'm surprised. Am going to an RSPCA branch meeting tomorrow, if one of the inspectors turns up I will have a word with them about their policy on situations like this.

Message 17. Pleased that the news was more positive than when I saw it. It was however most definately chained and tembling in the corner when I saw it and there were no other adults in the cage apart from 2 pups. There was no food or even water in their with them, just faeces. Just maybe they read my post and acted!

Thank you for going to look and do what you did.

Hi yes it is sectioned off with two puppies it had water but no food was not chained and in pen next to it were 3 healthy weight dogs . I had to go I can't know of an animal suffering and not see for myself what can be done . The male in with puppies is very old and partially blind . I hope the others are perhaps hunting dogs that go out on hunts and are no condemned to a cage life :(

As for puppies I really hope they find better lives but one thing u was definitely not impressed with is. The mother is back in with 2 males I pray it's been spayed but I very much doubt this .

Thank you Westender, the reason I told you the story of the poor dog was because the two men involved had come to live here from Girne! The irony being that we want to move TO Girne and our only worry was the danger to our pets. Some sort of divine message? The RSPCA say that if a dog has food and shelter they can do nothing, surely an animals welfare is just as important, and if not, they should use their generous funding and time changing the law!! They gave warning of their visit to the dog owner so of course they put a food bowl out, what use was that, The dog had no water, had not been walked once and nobody spoke to him or played with him at all. He was only 18 months old and healthy when he arrived but in the four weeks this man had him he lost half his body weight, had worms and fleas and was in great distress. There is silence now so he may have died or been moved elsewhere.

Difficult as its behind a high locked door. The owner locks it in its kennel , he ( the owner ) comes home at about 3 in the morning and sleeps till about midday.Just seen the dog, he has gone very quiet, only whimpering now.
